Luck at First Sight: Movie Review

By: Matt Suzara

Joma (Jericho Rosales) needs a lot of money to pay his debts and in order to earn cash quickly he just tries his luck in gambling. He is also a big fan of lucky charm and believes that if he can only find his life charm, everything will change. Soon she meets Diane (Bela Padilla), and he discovers that luck paves its way to their side when they are close to each other. Diane is hesitant at first but knowing that she also needs money for her father's operation; the two eventually agreed to try their luck. Things all goes into what they have planned until the day they start to fall in love.

There are a lot of romantic comedy films that come out every now and then, but it is good to see Director Dan Villegas back with another brilliant masterpiece that he can add to his impressive resume. Luck at First Sight is a complete package for every Filipino moviegoer who loves to watch an entertaining Filipino flick that is worth for the price of admission. You'll enjoy its simplicity yet charming throughout with outstanding cast to back the entire thing up.

The film is full of wit with a lot of humorous scenes that easily hypes out the audience and bursts them into laughter. Thanks to its brilliant cast the comedic sketches are neatly done as they effortlessly provide energy and set the tone into an enjoyable way. It also helped that the film is pretty straightforward, and even it is a bit predictable at times; it doesn't take away the fact that it was delivered in the most engaging way possible.

At first, I was a bit doubtful if the pairing between Jericho Rosales and Bella Padilla would click. However, after watching the entire film last night I was impressed how the two easily provided the charm throughout and captivated the audience with the uniqueness of their chemistry. Jericho Rosales once again proves how versatile he can be. He pairs well with Bella Padilla as the two made every scene believable. I also love the fact that they have included Kim Molina and Cholo Barretto as the main comedy troopers as they steal the spotlight whenever the two starts to spill their lines.

Overall, Luck at First Sight is an endearing and delightfully sweet rom-com with a compelling cast that spell a lot of fun even it looked formulaic at times. It is highly recommended as the lead stars charismatic appeal can already bring so much to its  desirable premise. I can't wait to see another Dan Villegas project as he continues to impress and easily becoming one of our favorite directors.
