Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 : Movie Review

By: Matt Suzara

The Guardians of the Galaxy returns with Star Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista), Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper) and Baby Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel) finding themselves hired on a new mission. However, when Rocket tries to double-cross their employer - the leader of the Sovereign army led by Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki) chases them into the galaxy and wants them dead. As the whole crew nearly crashes down, a mysterious ship helps them to avoid death. It turns out that the one helped them is a powerful force named Ego (Kurt Russell) who also happens to be the Star Lord's father.

After a successful first masterpiece by James Gunn, the chunk of awesomeness continues in Vol. 2. The opening minutes are already a gentle reminder of what are we all going to expect in this second chapter. It contains another epic soundtrack that sets the mood right. The tracks perfectly fit in each scene they are played into. All our beloved characters returned for another salvo with new faces to join the group. It also highlights the most adorable creature in the Marvel Universe in Baby Groot that everyone wishes to have in their backyard.

Volume 2 can't replicate the table set by its predecessor, but it is still a rare feature that knows how to entertain all the viewers. Director James Gunn gave each character a time to shine and managed to hold a steady plot line without ruining anything. It also doesn't run out of comedic bullets that hits neatly to make the audience laugh hard with some of its scenes. The entire thing is visually stunning and creatively brought into a new level which accentuates vibrant landscapes that has a blistering result in 3D.

Chris Pratt keeps the swagger into the character and fully embraces the role putting a lot of charm in it. This film reinvented his career and made him one of the top caliber actors in this generation. Dave Bautista finally broke out from his shell and became an instant favorite. Bradley Cooper brings more fun in Rocket while Vin Diesel's Baby Groot always steals the spotlight. It is also nice to see the ladies do their thing with Zoe Saldana and Karen Gillan enjoying their sibling rivalry. Newcomers Pom Klementieff and Elizabeth Debicki made their mark with their corresponding roles while Kurt Russell also did a great job expanding the GOTG line-up.

Overall, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is a well-crafted sequel. It picks everything what it left from the previous installment and once again provides the audience a cinematic experience at its finest. It may not surpass the greatness achieved by its predecessor, but it is only a few inches away from duplicating its one-two punch.

Lakwatsera Lovers rates it 10 out of 10 stars

Cast: Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel

Gifted: Movie Review

By: Matt Suzara

Mary (McKenna Grace) isn't an ordinary seven-year-old kid who wants to play with dolls or watch TV all the time. At her early age, she knows how to solve extreme mathematical equations in minutes. When Mary's school finds out about her talent, they want her to be a part of a school for gifted children but his uncle Frank (Chris Evans) reluctantly disagrees because she promised her sister to take care of Mary and give her a normal life. Soon, when her estranged mother Evelyn (Lindsay Duncan), finds out she insists that her granddaughter should enhance those talents and the only way possible way to make that happen is for them to battle in court for the child's custody.

Gifted has a very simple story that doesn't need special effects and bombastic scenes to get the attention of its audience. It is an engaging dramedy that relies heavily with its charming casts. With the film lacking in depth, the casts managed to bring out their tricks and put it in a good use.

Chris Evans once again proves that he can be a hero even without his costume and shield. He is believable throughout and basically delivers when needed. McKenna Grace, on the other hand, is a child wonder that steals the spotlight whenever she in on the scene. I love the way she acted as you can easily connect with the audience with just a simple spill or glance making everything look effortless on her part. Supporting characters also did a magnificent job with Academy Award winner Octavia Spencer making the most out of her short stints in the film while Lindsay Duncan convincingly plays as the annoying grandmother.

Overall, Gifted is a pretty straight-forward film that has a heart, outright funny and overloaded with charm. It is predictable in some way, but it's very effective and entertaining from start to finish.

Lakwatsera Lovers rates it 8 out of 10 stars

Cast: Chris Evans, McKenna Grace, Octavia Spencer

Opens May 3 in cinemas nationwide

Empowered Ladies Rocks The  "GALAXY" in “GUARDIANS” Sequel

The women of Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy Vo. 2 – Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Karen Gillan (Nebula) and Pom Klementieff (Mantis) are ready to rock the galaxy in the year's highly anticipated sequel.

In the film, reformed assassin Gamora hopes that her heroic deeds with the Guardians will help her atone for the sins of her past. Gamora must grapple with her own demons and the consequences of her flight from Thanos’ employ when confronted by her adoptive sister Nebula.

Saldana explains her character’s arc in the new film. “In the first ‘Guardians’ she’s on a mission to be free or die because she’s over it. There’s a selfish essence to her, and it makes prerogative very personal. Versus like in this one, she’s on a path of redemption, so she wants to be very present in trying to do good. And that also means, on a very personal and uncomfortable level, that she has to try to just let go of whatever animosity existed between her and her sister.”

The challenging part of Gamora’s evolution is getting to that place as an older sibling of accepting and being the one to let that younger sibling know their true powers,” adds Saldana. “So that’s part of her arc in trying to make peace with her sister is a part of her redemption because she is starting to realize that she is the only family member she’ll ever know, and she's worth the sacrifice, work and the pain.”

Another character with a much bigger role in the film is Gamora’s adversarial sister Nebula, played by Karen Gillan. A supreme bad-ass, Nebula will not rest until she has destroyed Gamora and anyone or anything that gets in her way.

There is no doubt in that Nebula was a bad guy in the first Guardians of the Galaxy film, but Gillan admits, “That’s what I love about her, to be honest. I love that she has this real dark side, and I get to explore that, which is really cool. In terms of the second film, she’s still a bad guy. But we’re going to get to understand her motivations for being a bad guy a little bit more.”

Elaborating, she adds, “I feel like Nebula’s a little misunderstood, like a lot of villains. She’s a bad guy, but she has a real valid reason for it and it’s because of an even bigger bad guy, Thanos. She has so much pent-up anger and so much sibling rivalry inside of her that is just bursting out. I just feel really sorry for her, actually. Whenever you’re playing a villain, you have to become their lawyer and understand why they did the things that they did and sort of justify it. And through doing that, I really began to care about her. I think she’s a great interesting character.”

To cast the role of Mantis, the filmmakers auditioned many actresses and ultimately decided on Pom Klementieff, who takes on her biggest role to date.

For Klementieff, getting the part of Mantis was the beginning of an exciting experience. “When I had the audition, I had no idea how big the character would be and that it would be a really fun and moving and special character,” the actress says. “She makes me think of a kid who had a difficult and lonely upbringing and then meets people who open a new world to her. It’s a beautiful arc for the character.”

Describing Mantis, Klementieff says, “Mantis is an alien and an empath; she has some insect elements in her. She grew up pretty much on her own and hasn’t had much interaction with people.”

But over the course of the movie, Mantis develops a friendship with Drax, played by Dave Bautista. “I think they get along because they both have a weird sense of things, and they don’t really have the same sense of humor that everyone else has,” the actress comments. “I think what is interesting is that they’re just friends. There is nothing romantic about it. They just get along.”

Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 stars Chris Pratt as Peter Quill/Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket, Michael Rooker as Yondu, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, Elizabeth Debicki as Ayesha, Chris Sullivan as Taserface, Sean Gunn as Kraglin, Tommy Flanagan as Tulik, Laura Haddock as Meredith Quill, with Sylvester Stallone as Stakar, and Kurt Russell as Ego.

Opening across the Philippines on April 26, 2017, Marvel' Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, is distributed in the Philippines by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

It's Game on as Shooting Begins on New Line Cinema's “GAME NIGHT”

Principal photography is underway on New Line Cinema’s action comedy “Game Night,” starring Jason Bateman (the “Horrible Bosses” films, TV’s “Arrested Development”) and Oscar nominee Rachel McAdams (“Spotlight,” “Dr. Strange”). Filming began on location in Atlanta, Georgia, under the direction of Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, marking their second film as co-directors following “Vacation.”

Joining Bateman and McAdams in the cast are Billy Magnussen (“Bridge of Spies,” TV’s “American Crime Story”), Sharon Horgan (Amazon’s “Catastrophe”), Lamorne Morris (TV’s “New Girl”), Jesse Plemons (“Black Mass,” TV’s “Fargo”), Kylie Bunbury (TV’s “Pitch,” “Under the Dome”), Michael Cyril Creighton (“Spotlight”) and Kyle Chandler (“Manchester by the Sea,” TV’s “Bloodline”).

Bateman and McAdams star as Max and Annie, whose weekly couples game night gets kicked up a notch when Max’s charismatic brother, Brooks (Chandler), arranges a murder mystery party, complete with fake thugs and faux federal agents. So when Brooks gets kidnapped, it’s all part of the game…right? But as the six uber-competitive gamers set out to solve the case and win, they begin to discover that neither this “game”—nor Brooks—are what they seem to be. Over the course of one chaotic night, the friends find themselves increasingly in over their heads as each twist leads to another unexpected turn. With no rules, no points, and no idea who all the players are, this could turn out to be the most fun they’ve ever had…or game over.

Goldstein and Daley are directing the film from an original screenplay by Mark Perez (“Accepted”). John Davis (“Joy”) and Jason Bateman are producing, with Marc S. Fischer, John Fox and James Garavente serving as executive producers.
