Passengers: Movie Review

By: Matt Suzara

Jim Preston (Chris Pratt) is one of the 5,000 plus passengers on board in a ship traveling on a 120 year journey to populate a new planet. Unfortunately, Jim's pod broke down waking him up 90 years early until they can reach their destination. When he finally realizes his situation, Jim accepted his faith but then everything changes when he decided to wake up a beautiful New York writer Aurora (Jennifer Lawrence). Without the ability to get back into their pods to hibernate, Jim and Aurora made the most out of their time enjoying each other's company. Will the two still find a way to restore their pods and reach their destination?

Passengers had a promising trailer and premise, but a lot of critics threw in negative reviews neglecting it to a dismissal 31% on Rotten Tomatoes website. I didn't expect much when we attended the special preview of Passengers last December 28. I thought I will also get disappointed with the film. But I was surprised as the film easily got my attention.

It  slowly builds its momentum with Chris Pratt starting the show. When Jennifer Lawrence arrives, the story becomes more compelling and intriguing. Their chemistry alone carried the film and made it more interesting by the minute. Chris Pratt provides the charm that he already mastered from his previous films that made him a big star while Jennifer Lawrence is simply outstanding and stunning making them an astonishing pair.

Overall, Passengers is a unique take on a sci-fi love story boosted by the incredible performances coming from its remarkable lead stars. It also has amazing visuals to back it up even it has a predictable ending. Still, Passengers is a worthy outer space adventure that will rock the theaters to start 2017.
