Saving Sally (MMFF 2016) : Movie Review

By: Matt Suzara

Marty (Enzo Marcos) first met Sally (Rhian Ramos) at school when he is rescued by her against a bully. They became good friends and eventually Marty fell in love with Sally but didn't have the guts to tell her how he truly feels. Things became more complicated when Marty learned that Sally already had a boyfriend (TJ Trinidad) and with Sally having strict parents, Marty became the bridge between the two even he knows that his feeling will get hurt.

The film has a familiar story line but with staggering visuals that are really pleasing to watch. They kept it simple and yet its pretty remarkable giving a fresh new life to Philippine Cinema. The animation was flawless as we felt a comic book was brought into life. There are just so many aspects in this film that are really amazing, and I admire the people behind this film as a decade of hard work finally turned into a masterpiece that we can all be proud of.

I wished that they just used Filipino language to make the film feels more Pinoy. Aside from that, the entire film was superb and was catchy right from the start up to the post credit scene. I loved the fact that they emphasized the true meaning of friend zone where in a lot of viewers can easily relate into. The casts also did a terrific job, but it's hard to sell the chemistry between Enzo Marcos and Rhian Ramos.

Overall, Saving Sally is a one-of-a kind film that is definitely worth it of your time and hard-earned money. It shows that Filipinos can still bring a refreshing piece of entertainment inside our cinemas. Kudos to everyone who made this movie possible.
