‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ : Movie Review

By: Matt Suzara

The first stand-alone chapter in the franchise, Rogue One tells the story about Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) who witnessed her mom killed and her scientist father (Mads Mikkelsen) taken by the Empire when she was still a little child. His father was a vital piece in finishing an ultimate destructive weapon called as the Death Star. Now, a grown-up Jyn must take part of the rebellion to find her father and steal the plans for the Empire's Death Star.

Rogue One is another exciting vital piece of this highly anticipated franchise. It is rich in details and filled with fresh new faces plus cameos that will make any Star Wars fan electrified on their seats. However, there are some parts that are a bit slow and dragging but when the battle finale starts it's just an eye-popping extravaganza that will surely leave you breathless.

Director Gareth Edwards follows the footsteps of Director J.J Abrams from the Force Awakens last year. It is explosive and action-packed but without the help of light-sabers except the one used by Darth Vader in a particular scene. It is filled with humor mostly coming from Chirrut Imwe played by Donnie Yen and if The Force Awakens got a cute BB-8 droid, Rogue One has a K-2S0 that got all the best comedy lines in the entire film.

Great effort coming from all the stars in this film. Felicity Jones made her role memorable playing as the bad-ass rebel Jyn Erso. Ben Mendelsohn perfectly portrayed the main antagonist Orson Krennic while Donnie Yen shined with his awesome partner Jiang Wen. Diego Luna, Riz Ahmed, Mads Mikkelsen and Forest Whitaker are all utilized well, and all made a solid impact to the entire film plus Alan Tudyk totally brought K-2S0 to life.

Overall, Rogue One is an entertaining and a welcome addition to this epic Star Wars franchise. I still loved the Force Awakens but  Rogue One is truly a captivating cinematic experience.
