Max Steel: Movie Review

 By: Matt Suzara

Max McGrath (Ben Winchell) and his mom (Mara Bello) are back to their hometown - the place where his scientist father died in an industrial accident. He has a lot of questions that are still left unanswered and soon discovers a much bigger riddle to his identity. It seems that he has a powerful energy inside his body that is hard to control but when Max finally met a flying extra terrestrial robot named Steel (Josh Brebner) they form a metal suit superhero with amazing powers. The two form an alliance to create Max Steel and they both need to learn and control their powers and prepare for a dangerous enemy from outer space.

When I first saw the trailer of Max Steel, I was really excited to see it because finally another superhero film emerges out of the DC and Marvel universe. However, Max Steel turns out to be pretty lame, disoriented and uninspired. It started dull and doesn't seem to know when to step on the gas pedal to gain some momentum. The story was quite confusing, and the series of flashbacks doesn't help at all and made it annoying at times. The metal suit looked horrible plus the fight scenes were extremely disappointing.

The only thing that made the film a bit enjoyable is when Steel is around to deliver some fun. Ben Winchell was good but didn't have the charisma and seems lost in some of the scenes. He also doesn't have the chemistry with her leading lady Ana Villafañe. Veterans Maria Bello and Andy Garcia were in the mix but can't save this film from turning into a complete disaster.

Overall, Max Steel is an easy candidate for the worst movie of the year. It just blew up its chance to be a potential superhero franchise. Sorry to say but it is a complete waste of time and money.
