The Secret Life of Pets: Movie Review

By: Matt Suzara

Max (voiced by Louis CK) is a small dog who almost has nothing to ask for. He has a very responsible and loving owner who takes care and gives the attention he needs since he was adopted. However, when his owner brought home a much larger dog named Duke (Eric Stonestreet), Max quickly thought that his life would be ruined if he can't get rid of Duke. Soon, Max plans backfired when Duke retaliated and the two find themselves lost in the city while being hunted by dogcatchers and a crazy bunny (Kevin Hart). Leaving with no choice, Max needs to team-up with his big Duke and find their way home.

The Secret Life of Pets is a an adorable animated flick but can't take away the fact that it has so many resemblance with Toy Story. It's just the characters are animals instead of toys. But still, the film has its own style and gorgeous visuals to stand on its own ground.

At the first few minutes, the film introduces us to answer a question on what do our pets do when we leave our house. It is basically, the theme of this movie and the idea was way too cute and funny. The conversations and the bonding of these domesticated animals were just simply on cue in bringing in the desirable entertainment suited not only for the young audiences but also for the kids at heart.

It is also great that the film has a set of lovable characters that are voiced by an excellent set of quality stars. Louis CK made a tremendous effort in making Max cuddly as he could be. Jenny Slate and Eric Stonestreet also made a terrific job in giving life to Gidget and Duke respectively. But it was Kevin Hart's Snowball who took most of the spotlight even he is a villain. He just made a psychotic bunny likable in any means and produced tons of laughter whenever the white fur ball is around.

Overall, The Secret Life of Pets will be tagged as a Toy Story rip-off, but it surely can give the audience something to chew out of this entertaining animated film. It is a nice film for the whole family to enjoy, and for sure you'll love your pets even more after seeing this film and probably adopt a crazy bunny after you leave the cinema.
