Sully: Movie Review

By: Matt Suzara

On January 15th, 2009, United Airlines Pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger (Tom Hanks) and his co-pilot Jeff Skiles (Aaron Eckhart) lost two engines of their plane because of a bird strike. With 155 lives on board, Captain Sully decided to land the plane on the icy Hudson river and miraculously succeed without any casualties. However, as the whole nation celebrates his heroism, question lies whether his decision was indeed the right thing to do.

The film details the story on what really happened on the "Miracle of the Hudson." Yes, it is a good story to tell highlighting the act of heroism of a pilot who saved the lives of his passengers and crew members. However, it was long and stretched where some of the scenes become tedious and repetitive. The exciting bit is when they recreated the event of that memorable day while the whole investigating thing was quite extended just for the sake of length of the film.

But the result of the investigation was pretty satisfying. I really love the outcome how the whole thing boiled in the end. Tom Hanks was pretty remarkable in playing Captain Sully. He once again shows that he is a versatile actor who can easily make any character standout because of his brilliance. Well, that is Tom Hanks for you guys. Aaron Eckhart also made a tremendous effort while Laura Linney was quite derailed on the sidelines.

Overall, Sully is a simple inspiring film thanks to Clint Eastwood's masterful direction and another wonderful performance from Tom Hanks. It is just a bit boring at times but soon provides some spark to turn things around in delivering a gratifying finale.
