Bridget Jones's Baby: Movie Review

By: Matt Suzara

Bridget Jones's Baby reunites Bridget Jones (Renée Zellweger) and Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) for the first time as the two didn't quite have the chance and reach the status of happily ever after. They are also joined by Jack Qwant (Patrick Dempsey) who happens to have a romantic random hook-up with Bridget at a music festival. Soon, Bridget learns that she is pregnant but a big problem comes into play - who is the father of her child?

I haven't watched the first two films yet, and I didn't expect much when we attended the special advance screening of the film last night. Surprisingly, the film turned out really hilarious and entertaining from start to finish. Yes, it is a chick flick, and I had no idea who and what are the history between the characters, but it doesn't matter since it is easy to pick up on where they left off.

The story was quite formulaic, but it doesn't take the fact that it is also charming and delightful. The casts were pretty much up for the challenge and really gave their all in making it engaging as possible. It didn't have a dull moment as every minute counts as it gets better and better making the crowd glued onto their seats in its two-hour run time.

Renée Zellweger may have aged but still had the same energy and sparkle in her eyes in playing the titular character. Her two leading men also did a great job on their roles. It is really nice to see Colin Firth and Patrick Dempsey playing the tug of war for the heart of Bridget. The fans of the franchise will easily root for Mark Darcy but for the newbies like us, we easily pick a much lighted Jack Qwant. We also like to commend the supporting cast, especially the high-spirited Shirley Henderson, who spilled out the humor whenever she is on the scene.

Overall, Bridget Jones's Baby easily marks as one of the best comedy films released this year. We really enjoyed the film last night, and I am aching to see the first two movies, so I can catch up. Playful and compelling, Bridget Jones delivers both the comedy  and the romance with a red cherry on top.
