Nine Lives: Movie Review

By: Matt Suzara

Tom Brand (Kevin Spacey) has everything. He is already a billionaire, and his company will have the tallest skyscraper in the northern hemisphere. The only thing doesn't have is the time for his beautiful wife Lara (Jennfer Garner) and his loving daughter Rebecca (Malina Weissman). Rebecca's birthday is coming and all she ever wanted is to have a cat but the problem is Tom really hates cats. With no options left, Tom rushed to the nearest pet store and bought Mr. Fuzzypants. However, before he can get home, Tom had an accident but when he wakes up, he soon discovers that he is trapped inside the body of the cat. Soon, Tom must realize the importance of time for his family and must figure a way how to break the curse and return to his body once and for all.

I didn't expect much with Nine Lives as it currently has a very disappointing 8% rating at rotten tomatoes website. The trailer was fun and interesting and since somebody invited us to attend the advance screening premiere last night; we gave it a shot. Surprisingly, the film isn't that bad compared of what we read in some of the reviews. Yes, the story is a bit dumb and predictable, but we really had a great time watching it. It had a lot of funny scenes that made a lot of the audience laugh hard. The film really aims the youngsters but also got to tickle the funny bones of the mature viewers. I've even heard a mom telling to her companion that she would recommend the film to her friends via social media when she gets home.

The cast doesn't need a lot of effort to make the entire thing work. Kevin Spacey was pretty fun with the voice-over to Mr. Fuzzypants. Jennifer Garner, Malina Weissman, Christopher Walken, and  Robbie Amell also did a nice job portraying their characters throughout. The CG cats look a bit odd at times, but it doesn't take away the fact that they are still cute and adorable while the real cats were just simply outstanding , thanks to their trainers.

Overall, Nine Lives will be tagged as a ridiculous film, but it will still win a lot of hearts, especially for those who really want to watch a light comedy flick that is suited for the whole family. I really don't understand the hate that this film receives. I only had a question, did we watch the same film?
