Lights Out: Movie Review

By: Matt Suzara

Rebecca (Teresa Palmer), moved out for good because of her unstable mother Sophie (Maria Bello) who has a history of mental illness. She never contacted her mom again until her 10-year-old stepbrother Martin (Gabriel Bateman) asked for her help as he sees his mom talking with someone named Diana (Alicia Vela-Bailey) that only appears in the dark. Soon, Rebecca starts to investigate the past of her mom and learns that Diana is a dangerous treat not only for her brother but to her whole family.

With over three million views on Youtube, David F. Sandberg's short film was finally turned into a featured-length horror film that will definitely bring in new dimension to this genre. Lights Out is an outstanding debut for David Sandberg, who takes a simple premise to reach new heights. Many of us are afraid of dark and Sandberg brilliantly uses the element to chip in scares in a convincing way. Horror movies nowadays, mostly are built in to rake some money and turns out to be crappy at the same time. Lights Out turned out to be a decent horror flick because it knows how to play with the viewers' imagination. The simplicity of it is superb and with a 81 minutes run time the film delivers and will surely leave a mark.

The film also got an A-plus from marvelous cast who really put a lot of effort into the picture. Young actor Jason Bateman was terrific as Martin as he shows the stress and anxiety convincingly. Teresa Palmer was also outstanding with her performance while Maria Bello delivers. We did loved the inclusion of Alexander DiPersia as Rebecca's charming boyfriend who provided some of the best moments in the entire film.

Overall, Lights Out effectively sells the horror and surprisingly delivers the material to bring in chills that will make you leave the lights on when you sleep at night. It is a well-crafted picture that worth-it to be seen on the big screen. Just don't forget to stay within the lights.
