The Girl King: Movie Review

By: Matt Suzara

Queen Kristina (Malin Buska) is the only surviving legitimate child of King Gustav II Adolf (Samuli Edelmann) and his mentally unstable German Queen Maria Eleonora (Martina Gedeck). At the age of six, she is already crowned as the Queen of Sweden and was raised by Chancellor Alex Oxenstierna (Michael Nyqvist). She officially became a Queen at the age of 18 and was pressured to marry someone and produce an heir. However, the Queen was unlikely to get attracted to men and was more curious with her feelings with Countess Ebba Sparre (Sarah Gadon).

The Girl King tackles the life of a lesbian Queen, who might not be known to many that is why I really didn't expect much when I entered the cinema last Monday night to attend its advance screening. However, the subject matter is quite an eye-opener, especially when it comes to the sexuality of the Queen. It's could have been better if they explored more about the relationship between Queen Kristina and Countess Ebba Sparre.

The film is a patience tester. It might have some dull scenes, but if you just put all of your attention to it, you can easily appreciate the entire thing. There is still a grain of humor mixed in the story to loosen some of the tight edges. As for the stars, Malin Buska made a terrific performance as Queen Kristina. She just owned the spotlight with her fiery portrayal even she struggles a bit in delivering her lines in English. While Sarah Gadon effortlessly provides the needed connection and chemistry with Malin Buska.

Overall, The Girl King is interesting and engaging at times. It just needed to be more intimate and be more informative to stand out and leave its audiences a mark. The fascinating story is already there, and they just didn't capitalize in it and take a wider scope in the life of the lesbian Queen.

Lakwatsera Lovers rates it 6.5 out of 10 stars
