A Hologram For The King: Movie Review

By: Matt Suzara

Alan Clay (Tom Hanks) is divorced with his horrible ex-wife and needs to go to Saudi Arabia to secure a deal of a lifetime in order to pay his daughter's college fees. Aside from it, he also a lump on his back that may be cancerous, and he is struggling to find a way to present their lucrative project because the King is nowhere to be find. As he scrambles his way adapting to a different place and culture, he finds himself in the company of an amusing taxi-driver (Alexander Black) and gets attracted to his Saudi doctor (Sarita Choudhury).

The film makes an efficient way of storytelling. It is well-crafted throughout and is nicely shot capturing the beauty of Saudi Arabia. It gets more interesting by the minute as we follow the adventures of a character you would easily care; thanks to another outstanding performance coming from Tom Hanks.

You can always bank on a film, especially if you are headlining Tom Hanks as your lead star. He can make any material work as he put his heart on everything; that is why it is so easy to love Alan Clay's character. Hanks is just simply fun to watch as he easily captivates the audience with his mastery in acting. He is also helped with two impressive supporting stars. Alexander Black provides in the humor and shines every time he is on the screen while Sarita Choudhury brings in a good romantic subplot, but it's quite unusual for Tom Hanks doing some low intimate scenes.

Overall, A Hologram For The King has its moments with Tom Hanks steering the wheel on the right direction. It's enjoyable, touching at times and pleasing in the eyes. Once again, Tom Hanks proves that a film could never go wrong whenever he stars in it.
