Nilalang: Movie Review

By: Lakwatsera Lovers

Last Sunday, was the special red carpet screening of Nilalang at SM Megamall where the cast and crew graced onto the red carpet to promote their entry. Thanks to a friend, we are able to attend it and watch Nilalang ahead before its nationwide release on Christmas Day.

Tony (Cesar Montano) thought that he already solved the mysterious killings along the Metro when he dropped a notorious serial killer dead who preys and tortures his lady victims. However, after a couple of years, the same trend continues and the latest victim counts Tony's girlfriend. Together with his loyal agent Jane (Meg Imperial), they look for some clues, which led them to Miyuki (Maria Ozawa), the daughter of Mr. Kazudo, who is a member of the Yakuza. Soon, Tony learns that they are dealing with a deadly entity and stopping the curse is easier to be said than done.

Nilalang opens with style and feels like you are watching a Hollywood film. It highlights a remarkable production design and incredible cinematography throughout. However, the film suffers in connecting the core of its story. It is quite messy and confusing at times as it squanders all of its effort in bringing up a decent plot.

The cast was fine but slowed down a bit by their material. Cesar Montano is a decent replacement for Robin Padillia but seems to lose some of his charm. Maria Ozawa is still gorgeous, but she struggles with the language barrier and look lost in some of the scenes. We really liked the addition of Meg Imperial as she seems to enjoy her role, and we need more Yam Concepion exposure the next time around. With three gorgeous ladies leading the way, it will just make you think that Cesar Montano is one of the luckiest guys in the world.

Overall, Nilalang is a wasted opportunity as it tries too hard to look cool but forgot to come up with a decent story. There is a lot of room to improve, but we admire their efforts in creating an awesome looking flick.

Lakwatsera Lovers rates it 6 out of 10 stars
