A Second Chance: Movie Review

By: Lakwatsera Lovers

Popoy and Basha (John Llyod Cruz and Bea Alonzo) are now married. The two started a firm together while dreaming to have their own house to start their family. However, after almost seven years into their marriage, things aren't quite the way they expected. They lost their first child in a miscarriage, and their firm is struggling to get some new clients because of a failed project due to Popoy's negligence. Even through the toughest times in their lives will the two still overcome the odds and find a way to stay together?

When the teaser trailer surfaced the net a few months back; we are really isn't sure if Popoy and Basha's story needed a sequel. We immediately thought that this might be a cash-grab film since the first one was such a big hit. Before Jadine, Kathniel and Aldub were formed this popular love-team took the country by storm and made John Llyod and Bea as the best pairing we've had in recent years.

Now, Director Cathy Garcia-Molina brings the love story of Popoy and Basha into a new level. It is a story about the struggles of their married life and how to sustain the fire in their relationship. What we've like about in this film is that their problems didn't involve third parties that may lead them to a familiar trope. However, there are too much tension and drama between the characters. Back and forth, we go as their egos collides making some of the scenes tedious and tiring at some point.
What made the first film memorable is because of the lines that a lot of people can relate with. They still had a lot of hard-hitting dialogues here, but it doesn't quite hit the right spot and fails to deliver a solid grip for you to feel it. There is just one scene in the whole film that made me emotional but a lady in front of me ruined it because of her loud scream.

But still the film works because of its talented stars. They embraced their roles, and they still look perfect together. It seems that nothing has changed even the first film was released eight years ago. The John Llyod Cruz and Bea Alonzo connection never fades. Their chemistry is still undeniably one of the best in the business even we all know that they are just good friends off the screen. They are just simply an enjoyable pair no matter what project they get; their pairing is still tough to beat.

Overall, A Second Chance cannot replicate the same feeling the first film had given us. It may be an unnecessary sequel but seeing the continuation of Popoy and Basha's love story is really a tough one for you to ignore.
