The Gift: Movie Review

By: Lakwatsera Lovers

The Gift is certified fresh at Rotten Tomatoes website currently having a 92% rating. Finally, we are able to unveil what's inside The Gift last Thursday. Thanks to OctoArts Film International for inviting us to attend the special advance screening at SM Megamall.

Simon (Jason Bateman) and his wife Robyn (Rebecca Hall) has recently moved into their new house and while they are buying some stuffs at the local store, they were approached by a man named Gordo (Joel Edgerton). It turned out that Gordo is an old school friend of Simon, who he barely remembered. Things get a little awkward when Gordo suddenly appeared in front of their doorsteps with a present and began to show up everyday uninvited to bring more gifts, which started to creep them out. Soon, the motives become unclear but with Robyn's pursuance, she starts to unveil a dark mystery behind Simon's past.

This is the directorial debut for Joel Edgerton and what a way to start it out. The Gift is a complete package; it is filled with tension in a gritty atmosphere, and you'll never know what will be going to happen next. It is also smart and stylish where you'll feel the terror in every scene while the story smoothly picks up.

What made the film stand-out is the way Edgerton design the horror which is so effective and realistic where he doesn't need too much violence to implicate the message of the story. He made sure that the timing is perfect and avoids complicating things.

The film is also bolstered with a great set of actors. We usually see Jason Bateman in comedy films, but he is indeed better in taking these kinds of roles. He gave a out a strong performance while Rebecca Hall carries the emotional weight making them an enjoyable pair to watch. Joel Edgerton skillfully knows how to push them out with their comfort zones and succeeds in making Gordo a character to remember.

Overall, The Gift is a slick psychological thriller that will definitely creep you out. The outer package doesn't seem interesting, but the suspense plays around while you unwrapped it and get shocked with the disturbing twist inside it.
