Poltergeist (2015): Movie Review

By: Lakwatsera Lovers

Struggling couple, Eric and Amy Bowen (Sam Rockwell and Rosmarie DeWitt) move with their three children into a much cheaper suburb in Illinois. What they didn't know that their place was an old cemetery which eventually makes their house haunted and things get a little complicated when their youngest child, Maddie (Kennedi Clements) disappears. To get their daughter back, they lean on paranormal investigators and a TV ghost buster expert Carrigan Burke (Jarred Harris).

The original Poltergeist film came out in 1982, obviously a film that is older than me. I haven't watched it yet, but I was excited to see what will Producer Sam Raimi and Director Gil Kenan offer to re-invent the horror classic. However, the film didn't come out the way we expected. It has a creepy atmosphere, but it couldn't maintain and capitalize the whole scaring tactics. The CGI bonanza definitely didn't work well and ruins the impact of scary parts.

As the film struggles, the cast stands out especially Sam Rockwell. He did the trick and gave out a strong performance. Jarred Harris is a welcome addition as a paranormal expert who made a lot out of his limited screen time. While  young Kennedi Clements and Kyle Catlett did well in showcasing their talents.

Overall, Poltergeist might be an unnecessary remake. The people who loved the original may get disappointed at the outcome of this. It is still entertaining at some point, but it feels a bit half-baked. It basically has a lot of room for improvement, especially in the essence of being scary.
