After The Ball: Movie Review

By: Lakwatsera Lovers

Aspiring talented fashion designer Kate (Portia Doubleday) decides to take the job offered by his father (Chris Noth). However, her stepmother (Lauren Holly) and her stepsisters bow to make her quit before she revives the company's old spirit. Eventually, they succeeded to sabotage Kate's dreams but with the help of her godmother (Mimi Kuzyk) and her gay best friend (Carlo Rota) she gets back into the company as a talented designer named Nate. All Kate's got to do now is to do what she loves and avoids revealing her secret identity.

When I first saw the poster, I immediately thought why make another "Cinderella" spin off?  With the recent success of Disney's live adaptation; this movie will surely suck but guess what were wrong. The film did start poorly but when it started to pick up the pace and the story, it all went well. It is a light entertaining feature where the movie gave a new twist putting "Cinderella" into the world of "The Devil Wears Prada." It sounds ridiculous, but it worked perfectly especially when all things were reinvented by its charms and pixie dust on the air without using magic.

Portia Doubleday was actually pretty good on the lead role, displaying the right amount of charm and providing the humor that the film needed. She is also quite believable as Nate even she looked a bit creepy as a guy. The supporting cast was great as well, as they infuse energy in their respective roles. Everyone had a great time in playing their part as you can see their dedication in it.

Overall. After The Ball might be cliched and predictable, but it doesn't ruin the entertainment factor. It may have trouble finding its ground but the willingness, and its heart remains throughout made the film fun and enjoyable.

Lakwatsera Lovers rates it 8.5 out of 10 stars
