Child 44: Movie Review

By: Lakwatsera Lovers

Thanks to Ayala Malls Cinemas, we had the chance to watch Child 44 last Friday night at Greenbelt My Cinema. We had doubts if the film is good since it is not well received by the critics abroad. But we admire  the talent in it which includes Noomi Rapace, Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman and our personal favorite Tom Hardy.

Set in Soviet Russia in 1953, Secret Soviet police agent Leo Demidov (Tom Hardy) loses his power when he refused to condemn his wife Raisa (Noomi Rapace) as a traitor. They are exiled from Moscow to Volsk, a dreadful provincial outpost which is under the supervision of General Mikhail Nesterov (Gary Oldman.) With a child serial killer on the loose Leo tries to hunt him down even it may put their lives on jeopardy. It is a very hard task since nobody wants to cooperate and his rival Vasili (Joel Kinnaman) will do anything to make Leo's life miserable.

Child 44 really got a lot of support from its stellar cast. Without them the lengthy run-time will be a major factor in sustaining the momentum of the entire film. Tom Hardy is always at his best as he provides a compelling performance throughout. Noomi Rapace and Gary Oldman manage to bring a lot on their roles while Jason Clarke,Vincent Cassel, Paddy Considine and Joel Kinnaman rounds it up a great supporting cast.

The story is compelling even it tries hard to weave all the interesting stuff in one place. The tension is built around it, especially in the latter part of the film. It may feel a bit rushed, and undeveloped but Director Daniel Espinosa still sends the film on a steady pace and ends it on a high note.

Overall, Child 44 is a gripping thriller. It gets better as it goes on and complimented by a mesmerizing performance by Tom Hardy.

Lakwatsera Lovers rates it 8.5 out of 10 stars
