Insurgent: Movie Review

By: Lakwatsera Lovers

Before Katniss bids good-bye at the end of the year, the front-runner for the next big franchise, The Divergent Series comes to its second installment with Insurgent. Thanks to Pioneer Films, SM Cinema and E-Plus for inviting us last night to the special screening of the film in IMAX 3D at SM Megamall.

When the first film ended, Tris and Four (Shailene Woodley and Theo James) are on a run and tagged as fugitives. They are hunted down by Erudite faction led by Jeanine (Kate Winslet.) who got a mysterious box in the house of Tris' parents in the Abnegation faction. She will do anything to catch Tris because she is a divergent, and she might be the key who can open an ancient box holding an encrypted message from the ancestors. Even she is troubled with her past choices; Tris is determined to overcome all the challenges in order to protect and save the ones she truly love.

Some might say that Insurgent is quite messy at some points, but it really doesn't mean that it is not entertaining. It is visually spectacular, especially with the help of the 3D effects on the big IMAX screen. The simulations are at a full blast, same as what they did on the first part of this series. With the film relying more with its fascinating design and swift action set pieces; it manages to keep it steady and avoided to become a CGI disaster.

Shailene Woodley carried the film throughout and provided a solid presence whenever she's on the screen. She proves that she is one those versatile actresses that can take a huge leap and take some big shots along the way making all her films highly recommendable. Theo James is still quite stiff but improved vastly compared to his first stint. While Miles Teller gives the much-needed humor throughout and held on to be as one of those characters you'll love to hate. Kate Winslet and Jai Courtney are colorful villains who really earned their minutes.

Overall, Insurgent is taking the right steps heading into a good direction for this franchise. Even though we liked Divergent more, Shailene Woodley's presence is more than enough for you to see this flick. The last part will be divided into two, which is quite irritating, but nonetheless, we are willing to wait and expect a more entertaining two-part finale for this franchise.
