“MR. PEABODY AND SHERMAN” Director Rob Minkoff Salutes Pinoy Animators

In a recent interview by ABS-CBN2 correspondent Don Tagala in New York where “Mr. Peabody & Sherman” junket was held, the movie’s director, Rob Minkoff praises Filipino animators whom he have worked with.  MInkoff also helmed the worldwide hit “Lion King.”  “Ruben Aquino was an animator that I worked with for a long time in Disney on the Lion King – a great Filipino animator.  He was one of the best animators I ever got to work with. He did adult Simba in The Lion King. He also animated Ursula in the Little Mermaid, which is a character that I designed,” shared Minkoff.

Mr. Peabody & Sherman”  is based upon the beloved characters that first appeared in in the late 1950s and early 1960s animated television series “Rocky and His Friends” and “The Bullwinkle Show,” produced by Jay Ward.
The new film updates the classic dog-and-his-boy team for contemporary audiences with state of the art CG animation and 3D, while retaining the charm of the original cartoon.

Mr. Peabody & Sherman” is an adventure-comedy featuring science fiction, time travel, outlandish characters and clever dialogue, all of which are bound together by the unexpected relationship between the titular heroes – a dog and his boy.

Mr. Peabody & Sherman” (available in 3D and 2D) is a DreamWorks Animation SKG presentation and a PDI/DreamWorks production, opens March 6 in Philippine cinemas nationwide from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

Ninja: Shadow of a Tear: Movie Review

By: Lakwatsera Lovers

This is actually the sequel of Ninja (2009) which also starred Scott Adkins. It's not a continuation so you don't need to worry if you decided to watch this without seeing the first one. We already forgot what the first film is all about, but all we remember is Scott Adkins is an incredible martial artist.

Casey (Scott Adkins), already had enough of violence, so he decided to settle in Japan with his wife Namiko (Mika Hijii). However, a tragic night changes his life when his wife is brutally murdered inside their house. With only revenge in his mind, he decided to go Thailand and with the help of his friend Nakabara (Kane Kosugi) he asks for information to find the people behind the death of his wife.

The story really doesn't make any sense, every time the protagonist goes to a place he always ends up in a fight. However, that's a good thing, all you'll probably enjoy is the fight scenes. They are all choreographed well enough in an old-school style. It typically has the resemblance with an antique Jackie Chan or Jet Li  movie, but this one runs some pretty simple moves. Well, simple doesn't mean boring, as the action sequences are decent and Scott Adkins fights with style.

The main problem is the plot; the motive of the villain is stupid. When the final act and predictable twist are revealed, it turned out more illogical and disappointing. It seems that they are trying to jump in different situations to keep it going and make our hero fight a lot. It's a little bittersweet for him but for the audience that the reason for us to enjoy it.

Overall, "Ninja: Shadow of a Tear" brings us back to basics. It will remind you that it does not necessary to use CGI effects in bringing an action film to life. As a whole, it's a bit messy but the important thing is we're treated with a bunch of outstanding fight sequences.

Cast of “AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2” to be in Singapore for Earth Hour Event

SINGAPORE/LOS ANGELES, FEBRUARY 27TH, 2014: WWF Singapore and Earth Hour Global today announced the director, producers, and cast of the highly anticipated upcoming motion picture The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will be coming to Singapore to celebrate this year’s global flagship event for Earth Hour, the world’s largest environmental grassroots movement, to be held at The Float@Marina Bay on Saturday March 29 at 8:30PM.
Spider-Man will join the film’s stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, and Jamie Foxx in the event, helping to switch off the lights across Singapore’s signature Marina Bay skyline.  The stars will also be throwing their support behind Earth Hour’s newly launched crowdfunding and crowdsourcing platform – Earth Hour Blue, with a message to individuals across the world to become Super Heroes for the planet.
We’re so excited that our first Super Hero ambassador for Earth Hour will join us for the global celebration of our planet in Singapore.  Since moving to Singapore, one of the world’s greatest hub cities, Earth Hour has positioned itself in the region with a rapidly growing digital presence that has helped power our movement.  Earth Hour Blue enables an every day digital action that can inspire individuals to do something so powerful from the palm of their hand,” said Andy Ridley, CEO and Co-Founder of Earth Hour.

While Earth Hour has grown from a lights out event to the world’s largest grassroots movement for the environment, the actual dedicated hour remains a key driver of wider engagement to act on environmental priorities across the world.
The Earth Hour platform is an incredible way to engage businesses, governments and individuals to help protect the planet. In line with the spirit of this global campaign to inspire simple yet long-lasting changes that can positively impact the planet, our hope is that Singapore will be a global leader in inspiring sustainable actions,” says Ms Elaine Tan, CEO of WWF-Singapore.

From its global headquarters in Singapore, Earth Hour has developed and launched Earth Hour Blue, a new crowdsourcing and crowdfunding platform that enables anyone to support environmental projects all over the world. The stars of the highly anticipated movie The Amazing Spider-Man 2 are among the first backers and supporters of Earth Hour Blue.

Andrew Garfield, who plays Peter Parker/Spider-Man, is supporting the Earth Hour Blue project ‘A Flame Called Hope’. The project aims to provide clean bio-gas energy for local communities in Nepal, thereby reducing deforestation and providing an alternate means of livelihood for families in the area.

I’m proud Spider-Man is the first Super Hero ambassador for Earth Hour because he shows we can all be Super Heroes when we realize the power we all have,” says Andrew Garfield. “Earth Hour is a movement that has created massive impact around the world.”

Emma Stone, who plays Gwen Stacy in the film, has chosen to support the Earth Hour Blue ‘Puppy Protectors’ project, which aims to train sniffer dog puppies and their handlers to track animals, find wildlife crime scenes, detect illegal trade items, and chase down poachers with the rangers on the frontlines of Chitwan National Park, Nepal.

Earth Hour gives you the power to inspire anyone, even if you’re just one person. There are great projects from the crowd, for the planet, happening all over the world,” says Emma Stone.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 director Marc Webb is backing the ‘Power up a Ranger’ project in Indonesia, which aims to provide better equipment for WWF Rangers protecting Indonesia’s endangered wildlife such as the Sumatran Tiger, Elephant, Rhino and Orangutan and their forest habitat.
The director is also a judge in WWF Singapore’s film competition “Use Your Power”, which will engage young filmmakers across Singapore to produce engaging, innovative, and creative short films that show the connection between people and environmental issues.
WWF-Singapore is also joining the Blue revolution through their crowdfunding campaign to expose and end the illegal sale of target wildlife species within Singapore. The organisation is also crowdsourcing pledges from individuals and organisations for local sustainability actions such as raising air conditioner temperatures by one degree Celsius, switching to LED lights and reducing the consumption of plastic bags.

Expanding on many sustainability efforts over the years, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 became the most eco-friendly tentpole production in the history of Columbia Pictures. These environmental efforts, on set and off, were supported at every level – from producers, studio executives, and cast and crew and began as soon as the film went into pre-production.
I’m very proud of the fact that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is entirely carbon-neutral.  We made a commitment to be as eco-conscious as possible during production itself, when we took a special effort to think green and avoid waste; now, completing that process with Earth Hour Blue is a wonderful testament to what we can achieve when we all work together,” says Jeff Blake, Chairman, Worldwide Marketing and Distribution, Sony Pictures Entertainment.
Now run globally from Singapore at the heart of Asia, Earth Hour has rapidly grown to involve hundreds of millions of people from all walks of life and global landmarks across 7000 cities and towns and 154 countries and territories.

It's one where business owners and their SMBs are able to do business with greater ease, with more efficiency at less cost, and attain sustainability and growth.

Globe myBusiness was recently launched as the key division for providing customized products and services to address the specific needs of individual business owners and their SMBs. Globe myBusiness is committed to becoming a trusted reliable business adviser and partner to business owners and their SMBs to help them attain sustainability and growth.

"We launched Globe myBusiness in support of business owners and their SMBs. We call it 'Globe myBusiness' as we endeavor to serve the owners and their businesses as if they were our own. It reflects the level of service we provide which is highly personalized and targeted. We are not a mere network provider to them but their business advisor in the most real sense.

"At Globe myBusiness, we listen to our customers’ needs and help them customize a suite of solutions and services designed to address their specific requirements. Globe myBusiness' differentiator is the ability to understand and deliver on the needs of business owners and their SMBs in a way nobody else can," said Martha Sazon, Globe myBusiness Head.

Sazon pointed out that business owners and their SMBs are a very "sophisticated" market. They know what they want and how to get it. "It all comes down to fulfilling our promise to business owners and their SMBs - that through our team we can make their businesses better by helping them maximize our services. It's ultimately about being a trusted business adviser and constantly delivering on that," she explained.

The Happy Concept Group of companies is owned by restaurateur Happy Ongpauco-Tiu. It is composed of restaurants, a catering service, a home spa and slimming service, and a bed-and-breakfast establishment. These include: World Topps; Hawaiian Bar-B-Que; Pamana Restaurant; the I Luv Backyard BBQ joint; Chef Happy’s Home Made Specialties and Catering Kitchen; My Happy Carts, which are themed food carts for kiddie parties; Boutique Bed & Breakfast; and Slim At Home.

One perfect example of how a partnership between Globe myBusiness and business owners and their SMBs can produce beneficial results is the case of restaurateur Happy Ongpauco-Tiu. According to her, she is able to live a wonderful personal life while growing her business. And she has Globe myBusiness to thank for. As a result, she’s been a loyal Globe subscriber for 20 years already.
Happy still remembers the wonder she felt when she got her very first cellular phone from her dad. It was a postpaid handset from Globe. At that time, when cellular phones were not as common as they are today, the instant connections that Globe provided her added a different dimension to her life.

Communication between family and friends became so much easier. And when my managers and staff got their own cellular phones, running my restaurants became more efficient. I was able to save on operating costs as we could exchange information more quickly and make decisions faster. We were also able to cut-down on the time and cost of transportation because face-to-face meetings became unnecessary in many cases,” said Happy.

Restaurateur Happy Ongpauco-Tiu is happy to share how using Globe myBusiness products and services allows her to live a wonderful life while achieving growth and sustainability for her businesses.

Happy comes from a family of restaurateurs—they own the Barrio Fiesta Group of companies. She learned the ropes of running a restaurant by working in her family’s various outlets, which include Barrio Fiesta, Bakahan at Manukan, Singing Cooks and Waiters, Atbp., and Isdaan. She also studied to become a chef at the Culinary Institute of America.

So it was no surprise when she started her very first restaurant, World Topps, in Timog Avenue, Quezon City in year 2000. She had to borrow money to turn a 60-square meter space into her first restaurant concept which was all about serving global cuisine as rice toppings. In 2011, she opened a second World Topps branch and also a new concept restaurant, Bento Box.

Happy’s other businesses include three other restaurants: Hawaiian Bar-B-Que, Pamana Restaurant, and the I Luv Backyard BBQ joint. She also established the Chef Happy’s Home Made Specialties and Catering Kitchen, and My Happy Carts, which are themed food carts for kiddie parties. Those interested in availing of the services of any of Happy’s businesses should visit the website

Despite having her own restaurants, she is still involved in the Barrio Fiesta Group. These past two years, she’s been busy with opening and taking charge of two Barrio Fiesta branches in Dubai, and one in Canada. She will open another branch in Qatar by the first quarter of 2014.
Happy has also expanded from the food business into the travel and tourism sector. She established The Boutique Bed & Breakfast, a seven-bedroom boutique hotel in Tagaytay. More recently, she put up Slim At Home, a mobile slimming clinic and spa that offers home services to clients. All of these enterprises are operated under the umbrella of her Happy Concept Group of Companies.

According to her, she has enjoyed the benefits of a wonderful life through the advantages that Globe myBusiness has brought to her businesses. “Thanks to the innovative and relevant products of Globe myBusiness, it’s much easier for me to run my business while also having the time and energy for my family and personal hobbies.”

Globe myBusiness Head Martha Sazon says that business owners and their SMBs comprise a "sophisticated" market that knows what it wants and how to get it. Globe myBusiness rises to the challenge of meeting the demands of this market by providing innovative, customized products and services and through the best customer service. "It all comes down to fulfilling our promise to our SMB subscribers. It's ultimately about being their trusted business adviser and constantly delivering on that," she explained.

Happy explained that her businesses benefitted greatly from the package of customized services that Globe myBusiness helps create for them. “The MySuper Plans that we got from Globe myBusiness help me, my managers, and my staff keep in touch constantly. In our businesses, we have a lot of people who use their mobile phones differently. Some rely on texting most of the time. Others need to make a lot of voice calls. And then we have people who need to use their smartphones for Internet browsing.

The good thing about MySuper Plan is that we can choose different packages of features and services for the needs of different people in our organization. And because we only pay for the services we actually need, we are able to bring our telecommunications costs down.

Happy pointed out that Globe myBusiness provides her with 24/7 access to after sales support and customer service. “We’ve also been getting advice about Globe myBusiness products and services through various touchpoints. I get all these through our dedicated Globe myBusiness account manager, or via Globe Stores, the hotline, website, Twitter or Facebook.” Happy has also been doing transactions with Globe online, whether for purchasing products and services or paying their Globe bills.
I just love the way I am able to access Globe myBusiness whenever, wherever and however I want.” she said. “For me, Globe myBusiness consistently delivers its promise. I can always count on them to help us with both our personal and business needs. I can truly say that they are our trusted business adviser," she added.

Rodrigo Santoro in all his splendor as Xerxes in “300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE”

An award-winning actor in Brazil when he gained fame around the globe, Rodrigo Santoro  now reprises his role of the magnificently adorned Persian God-King Xerxes from Zack Snyder’s 2007 worldwide hit “300” in the companion film, “300: Rise of an Empire.”

Based on Frank Miller’s latest graphic novel “Xerxes,” and told in the breathtaking visual style of the blockbuster “300,” this new chapter of the epic saga takes the action to a fresh battlefield—on the sea—as Greek general Themistokles attempts to unite all of Greece by leading the charge that will change the course of the war.

In “300: Rise of an Empire,” it is revealed how Xerxes became a God-King, a metamorphosis in which Athenian general Themistokles (Sullivan Stapleton) and Persian navy commander Artemisia (Eva Green) each played a significant part.  Rodrigo Santoro says, “In the first film, you had no idea where he came from, so seeing his transformation brings more dimension to this character, and you understand the power behind his throne.”

Artemisia has the will to destroy the Greeks but, alone, lacks the power to wage war on them.  However, with the death of Persia’s King Darius, at the hands of Themistokles, she sees her opportunity…and seizes it.  Twisting Darius’ deathbed warning that “only the gods can defeat the Greeks” to her own ends, she convinces his son and heir, Xerxes, that he must now become a God-King.

Director Noam Murro says, “I have always felt that the relationship between Artemisia and Xerxes is one of the most intriguing facets of this movie.  Is it only she manipulating him or is there manipulation from both sides?  Is she using him to take her revenge on the Greeks, or is he using her to get the power he wants because she is a brilliant general and can fulfill his ambitions?  It was important that we not make Xerxes look like he doesn’t know what he’s doing.  He’s warped and evil, but he is not a fool.”

Santoro notes, “The great thing about ‘Rise of an Empire’ is that we get to see Xerxes as a young man and understand how he transformed himself into this amazing being.  The way I see it, it was an act of courage on Xerxes’ part because he had to commit himself to a kind of death before he could experience this rebirth.”

Producer Bernie Goldmann says, “Through Rodrigo’s performance, you feel the power of Xerxes in his godlike form, but he also has moments early on where you get a glimpse of the man he had been.  I think it adds more depth to the character, and Rodrigo did a terrific job bringing that duality to light.”

The origin story of Xerxes came out of one of Frank Miller’s concepts,” producer Zack Snyder offers.  “I think the fun of telling it is making mythology out of reality, which has been happening around campfires since the dawn of time.”

Opening across the Philippines on Thursday, March 06 in IMAX 3D, Digital 3D, 2D and 30mm format, “300: Rise of an Empire” is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Girl Power in “THE OTHER WOMAN”

The ultimate Girls Night Out comedy movie, “The Other Woman” stars a powerhouse cast of women led by Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann, Kate Upton and Nicki Minaj.  In the movie, a woman learns that she’s part of a love triangle, so she teams up with the spurned wife in order to exact revenge on the cheating husband.
An unlikely friendship is developed between three women to bring down a cheating man, but ultimately become “the weirdest (and best) friends ever.”   United by getting even, they ultimately discover it’s not about getting back at the guy - it’s about sticking together, set in the scenic and aspirational backdrop of The Hamptons in New York and Cayman Islands.
Dying to get to the bottom of things with their cheating man played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau,  the fashion is an equally to-die-for must haves designed by Patricia Field, one of the world’s foremost costume designers who also dressed the lead stars in “Sex and the City.”

The Other Woman” opens May 7 in theaters from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

Non-Stop: Movie Review

By: Lakwatsera Lovers

We would like to thank Berroca_Ph in twitter for the advance screening tickets of Non-Stop we won on their twitter page. Non-Stop is the most anticipated film on our list this February as Liam Neeson takes over a plane and yes as what we expected in the trailer, this flick is solid right from the very start.

During a flight from New York City to London, U.S. Air Marshal Bill Marks (Liam Neeson) receives a series of text messages from an unknown passenger. He is instructed to transfer $150 million into his bank account. However, if he fails to comply and secure the money, he threatened to kill one passenger every 20 minutes. With over 150 passengers and crew members, Bill Marks should find the way to solve the mystery and uncover the motives of the culprit.

Liam Neeson finally takes a break in lending his voice to animated characters, and he's back in this gripping action thriller. The film pretty much had a high dose of excitement where you'll also keep guessing who is who and what would happen next. It is filled with mystery, twist after twist and keeps the momentum shifted in the high gear. We can say that some of the scenes and situations are ridiculous, but we wouldn't care less as we're kept hanging at the edge of our seats. Yet, Non-Stop isn't Taken, less action, fewer skills but it has the same amount of energy to keep it going as the story goes along.

Liam Neeson sends a clear message that he's still a force to be wrecking with. He is a bankable star where he can carry a film behind his back. He is baked up with an equally talented Julianne Moore, where the two performs well and both appealing on the screen. Other casts were not A-Lister's but lend quality minutes to make the film compelling.

Overall, Non-Stop is a solid action thriller flick. There's a nice amount of tension balanced in the whole film. The pacing is also important, as they did it neatly with a heart-pounding finale. Liam Neeson fans wouldn't be disappointed but for others who take movies seriously, you should opt to pass this one.

Lakwatsera Lovers rates it 10 out of 10 stars

Cast: Liam Neeson, Julianne Moore, Michelle Dockery

“AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2” Releases New Video “Rise of Electro”

When Electro rises, Spider-Man's greatest enemies will unite. Will Peter Parker pay the ultimate price to be the hero he is destined to become?

With barely two months before the grand debut of “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” in Philippine theatres on April 30, Columbia Pictures has revved up its marketing campaign by releasing a new, 3-minute footage called “Rise of Electro.” The video featurette can be viewed here at
Synopsis: We've always known that Spider-Man's most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” Peter Parker finds that a greater conflict lies ahead.

It's great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there's no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp.

The film, directed by Marc Webb from a screen story and screenplay by Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci & Jeff Pinkner based on the Marvel Comic Book by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, is produced by Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach.

Into the wild and bigger adventure in “RIO 2”

Carlos Saldanha, who co-directed and directed the global blockbuster “Ice Age” movies had long wanted to write a love letter to his hometown of Rio.  From his imagination came a story about a nerdy, highly domesticated bird who goes on the adventure of a lifetime in that wondrous city that produced the highly successful “Rio” movie released in April 2011 that became a worldwide smash with almost $500 million at the global box office.

Now, his lead characters Blu and Jewel voiced by Jesse Eisenberg and Anne Hathaway are back in “Rio 2” for a grandeur adventure into the wild with the Nigel the villain at their trail.  To fully realize the scope and breadth of this magical world and its vivid characters, Saldanha brought together an all-star voice cast, led by Oscar® nominees Anne Hathaway and Jesse Eisenberg, Oscar and Grammy®-winner Jamie Foxx, acclaimed musical artist, actor-musician Jemaine Clement, comedic actress Leslie Mann, actor Rodrigo Santoro (a Brazilian native), actor-comedian George Lopez, and funnyman Tracy Morgan.

Saldanha returns to Brazil and reunites his beloved characters in “Rio 2.”  In the new film, it’s a jungle out there for Blu, Jewel and their three kids, after they’re hurtled from Rio to the wilds of the Amazon. As Blu tries to fit in, he goes beak-to-beak with the vengeful and villainous Nigel, and meets the most fearsome adversary of all…his father-in-law.
The world’s favorite “Rio” characters are joined by Oscar nominee Andy Garcia, Grammy winner Bruno Mars, Tony® winner Kristin Chenoweth and Oscar/Emmy®/Tony winner Rita Moreno.  RIO 2 also features new Brazilian artists and original music by Janelle MonĂ¡e and Wondaland.

In “Rio 2” we find Blu, Jewel and their family living the perfect domesticated life in the city.  The offspring are: Bia (voiced by “The Hunger Games’” Amandla Stenberg), who lives with her beak in a book and likes spouting facts and figures, just like her dad; Tiago (Pierce Gagnon, “Looper”) the youngest, who is always up for adventure, especially if it involves destroying something; and Carla (singer/actress/comedian Rachel Crow), the eldest, a spunky teen who longs to get a little space from her protective family so she can express her musical side.

When Jewel decides the kids need to learn to live like real birds, she insists the family venture to the Amazon.  Blu tells his buddies of his travel plans, but Nico, Pedro and Luiz warn him of the myriad dangers that could lie ahead in the wild.  But the ever-positive Rafael encourages Blu, reminding him that “a happy wife means a happy life!” Upon their arrival, Blu and Jewel meet the locals, including Eduardo (Andy Garcia), a larger than life patriarch with a firm set of rules, who becomes a comedic obstacle for Blu; Mimi (Rita Moreno), Eduardo’s warm and sassy sister, who likes to speak her mind, even to her overbearing brother; and Roberto (singer-songwriter-record producer Bruno Mars), a perfect specimen of a wild bird who charms everyone around him and makes Bluself-conscious.  As Blu tries to fit in, he worries he may lose Jewel and the kids to the call of the wild. Meanwhile, the treacherous cockatoo Nigel plots his revenge on Blu, aided by Gabi (Kristin Chenoweth), a cute poisonous frog who is fiercely loyal to Nigel and though small in stature, possesses a huge villainous heart.

With the success of “Rio” the call for a sequel came quickly.  Saldanha decided to set his new story in the mammoth Brazilian wilderness.  “I wanted a setting very different from the one we explored in ‘Rio,’ he explains.  “I thought we should move away from the city.”  So, in RIO 2, it’s on…in the Amazon, not only visually, but musically.  “We wanted to look at different musical ‘flavors,’ sounds and exciting new beats that make the soundtrack for “Rio 2” even bigger than the first film,” says the director.

Rio 2” in 3D and 2D will open nationwide on April 9 in theaters nationwide from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.
