Now You See Me: Movie Review

Now You See Me
By Lakwatsera Lovers

First we would like to thank SM Cinema for inviting us to the special advance screening of Now You See Me last night at SM Megamall. It was the 2nd magic themed movie this year following The Incredible Burt Wonderstone last March. We all know that magic is just an illusion that is performed by talented people using a sleight of hand. But we all love magic tricks and we want to know how is it done. Now You See Me exactly will give you what you wanted: to be amazed and entertained at the same time.

Four different magicians with individual talents (Jesse Eisenberg, Isla Fisher, Woody Harrelson and Dave Franco) each received a card with an invitation from an unknown sender. One year later they are already a successful group called "The Four Horsemen". On their latest trick they robbed a bank in France without leaving the stage on a live audience in Las Vegas. Enters FBI agent Dylan Rhodes (Mark Ruffalo) who is assigned to capture these magicians. The problem is the further he pursues them the further he became the victim of their trick.

We know  that Now You See Me does look good in the trailer.  It reached our expectation as it mesmerized us from start to finish. Also the film has a lot of twist and turns that you'll feel that you already got it right but when they revealed it you never saw it coming. The twist will only surprise you unlike other movies that will make you scratch your head. Aside from it the film didn't have a dull moment, it sustained the momentum and made the audience focused all the time. Plus a lot of fun scenes throughout the entire film.

The stellar cast performed well as the chemistry between the four lead stars worked nicely. A great addition of Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine and Melanie Laurent as supporting cast in the mix. Mark Ruffalo is a pretty smart choice for Agent Rhodes and he really shined well. Though the film lacked in character developments the film is definitely worth of your time.

Overall Now You See Me provided 2 hours of quality entertainment. It has a unique concept, great story and talented set of actors. We highly recommend this film if you want to be dazzled inside the cinema

The closer you look, the less you'll see it!

Lakwatsera Lovers rates it 10 out of 10 stars

A Stellar cast assembles for “WHITE HOUSE DOWN”

Columbia Pictures and director Roland Emmerich has assembled a powerhouse cast to give life to compelling characters in the new action thriller “White House Down.”

In the film, Capitol Policeman John Cale (Channing Tatum) has just been denied his dream job with the Secret Service of protecting President James Sawyer (Jamie Foxx). Not wanting to let down his little girl with the news, he takes her on a tour of the White House, when the complex is overtaken by a heavily armed paramilitary group. Now, with the nation’s government falling into chaos and time running out, it’s up to Cale to save his daughter, the president, and the country.

The character at the center of “White House Down” is John Cale, an ex-soldier and divorced father who’s trying to put his life back on solid footing – especially when it concerns his relationship with his daughter. “Cale’s been trying to figure out his life for years, to get it together. He doesn’t really have the tools to put it all into place,” says Channing Tatum (“The Vow”). “But his heart is good – he’s always wanted to be his daughter’s hero. And now that he’s realizing that he can’t be that, due to mistakes he’s made, he thinks, ‘Well, she idolizes the president – if I can’t be her hero, maybe I can help protect the guy who is.’”

Opposite Tatum, the filmmakers cast Jamie Foxx (“Django Unchained”) as President Sawyer. Foxx says that the 46th president of the United States is “a man who would do anything to protect America, but also a man who understands that in order to protect America in this day and age, you have to have an understanding of the enemies. If you don’t have that understanding, or a way to open a dialog, you’ll forever be at odds and something drastic will constantly keep happening.”

Helping John Cale and President Sawyer fend off the ruthless mercenaries and their quest to seize control of the White House is the exceptionally adroit, tough-as-nails Special Agent Carol Finnerty played by Maggie Gyllenhaal (“The Dark Knight”).

At the beginning of the film, Finnerty has just turned down Cale’s application to join the Secret Service – but even that is not so simple. “Years ago, they had a crazy love affair,” says Gyllenhaal. “It was a long, long time ago, but they were crazy about each other. And now he’s back, she’s interviewing him, and of course he’s super hot and amazing in a lot of ways. He still takes her breath away. But he’s just not qualified to be a Secret Service agent.”

Jason Clarke (“Zero Dark Thirty”) plays the ex-soldier-turned-paramilitary-leader, the head of the invasion force, Emil Stenz. “He’s a former Special Forces guy – doing some nefarious things in strange places – and he became a gun for hire,” says Clarke. “And now, he’s been hired to try to take over the White House, to kidnap the president and try to make some money.”

Joey King (“Oz the Great and Powerful”) joins the cast as Cale’s daughter, Emily. Their estranged relationship is put to the test when they are separated during the crisis at the White House. “At the beginning of the movie, her parents are divorced and she’s not too keen on her dad,” explains King. “That’s why he takes her to his job interview with the Secret Service and gets her tickets to the White House tour – he knows she’s obsessed with all things politics and he thinks that will impress her. And it does – she’s super-excited. But then, when they get separated and all this crazy stuff happens.”

Richard Jenkins (“Cabin in the Woods”) joins the cast as the Speaker of the House Eli Raphelson, a career politician from the opposing party, and James Woods (“Straw Dogs”) as Martin Walker, the outgoing head of the Secret Service.
Opening across the Philippines on July 3, “White House Down” is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International. Visit for trailers, exclusive content and free downloads. Like us at and join our fan contests.

Who's who in Disney/Pixar's “MONSTERS UNIVERSITY”

Meet the monsters who are out to make audiences scream with laughter in Disney/Pixar's comedy “Monsters University,” the eagerly anticipated sequel to the 2001 blockbuster “Monsters, Inc.”

MIKE WAZOWSKI's (voice of Billy Crystal) lifelong dream is to become a Scarer at Monsters, Inc.—and he’s sure he knows just how to do it. Ever since he was a young monster, Mike’s had his eye on Monsters University, home of the world’s top Scare Program. Now a freshman and hopeful Scare student, he’s well versed in the rich history, theory and technique required to reach his goal, and the little green one-eyed monster has more confidence, enthusiasm, determination and heart than all of his classmates combined. But unexpected roadblocks derail Mike’s plans and he’s forced to team up with a group of misfit monsters and an unlikely ally to give it the old college try and pull off the biggest coup in the University’s history.

JAMES P. SULLIVAN—“SULLEY” (voice of John Goodman). When it comes to Scaring, Sulley’s a natural—his abundant size, fierce roar and family legacy of a long line of high-achieving Scarers make him a shoo-in for the esteemed Scare Program at Monsters University. But from the moment the overly confident monster steps his big furry feet on campus, it’s clear he’d rather crack jokes than books—and he learns the hard way that his unfettered talent and family ties can only get him so far.

RANDY BOGGS (voice of Steve Buscemi). Freshman Randy Boggs has big aspirations for college life. The peculiar lizard-like monster with his host of gangly arms and legs plans to major in Scaring and lead an active social life filled with fun, friends and fraternity parties. If only he could get his embarrassing disappearing habit under control, he’d be good to go, because how is he ever going to be a great Scarer if nobody can see him?

DON CARLTON (voice of Joel Murray). Faced with the realities of the economic downturn, Midwestern sales monster Don Carlton finds himself going back to school to learn new skills and pursue a dream career in Scaring. One of the university’s “mature” students and a founding member of the Oozma Kappa fraternity, Don brings his honest hardworking spirit to their endeavors, ensuring that his fellow brothers keep their various heads on straight and their array of eyes on the task at hands.

SCOTT “SQUISHY” SQUIBBLES (voice of Pete Sohn) gives new meaning to the term “undeclared.” A sophomore whose dream of becoming a Scarer was squashed in his first year, “Squishy” is a bit of a wide-eyed wanderer—small, sweet, naïve and quiet—who, not surprisingly, still lives with his doting mother. But with a little help from his Oozma Kappa brothers, Squishy begins to realize he’s more than just that shy monster in the corner.

ART (voice of Charlie Day). The ultimate free spirit, Art is a mysterious monster with a questionable background. By far the strangest member of the Oozma Kappas, Art bowls over the competition—sometimes literally—with his unique dexterity and wild-card ways. Nothing is scarier than the unpredictable, especially when it comes to this furry ball of bad.

TERRI & TERRY PERRY (voices of Dave Foley & Sean Hayes). When it comes to Terri and Terry, it’s hard not to ask, “Are two heads really better than one?” These bickering brothers have little in common: Terri with an “i” is a real romantic who’s quick to spot the silver lining in any situation, while older brother Terry with a “y” sports a more cynical outlook on life. If they can stop squabbling long enough to work with their Oozma Kappa brothers—they might be able to put their heads together—literally—and find their place in the university’s Scare Program once and for all.

DEAN HARDSCRABBLE (voice of Helen Mirren). To her, there are scary monsters and there are all other monsters. It’s no surprise she feels this way—she is, after all, a legendary Scarer and Dean of the School of Scaring at Monsters University. Aspiring Scare students must be up for the challenge to impress her, though she is convinced that her assessment of who is truly scary and who is not is never wrong.

PROFESSOR KNIGHT (voice of Alfred Molina) teaches Scaring 101, the introductory course to Scaring at Monsters University. With hundreds of new Scare students each year, he must weed out the weak from the talented and identify who shows the most potential to be real Scarers. Only a few have what it takes to pass the formidable final exam and move on to the elite Scaring Program.
Opening across the Philippines on June 26 in Disney Digital 3D, 2D and regular theaters, “Monsters University” is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International through Columbia Pictures.

Juana C. The Movie: Movie Review

Juana C. The Movie
By: Lakwatsera Lovers

First we would like to thank SM Cinema and E-Plus for the tickets of the Red carpet screening of Juana C. The Movie. We also want to thank them for the special Juana C. movie goodies including a shirt. A lot special guest, directors, media and the cast are present during the said event. Theater actress Mae Paner a.k.a. Juana Change simply delivers this film like what she did on her previous YouTube videos.

When Juana (Mae Paner) graduated from high school she is forced to take the scholarship in Manila because the valedictorian of their class falls into a river filled with toxic waste. The people in her hometown count on her to finish her studies and save their village from an expanding nickel mining plant. But when she steps on Manila she was quickly entertained by socialites classmates who introduces her to a luxurious lifestyle. In order to sustain this life she is forced to become a prostitute and eventually landed in the hands of corrupt politicians. Soon she finds out that her hometown is in peril and it is in her hands to expose the dirty deeds of this public servants.

They simply showed their advocacy into a new level. They started from YouTube clips and now they did it in a movie. The good thing about it is the film is really entertaining. With a lot of funny scenes all throughout the cinema was filled with laughter. Thanks to its brilliant director Jay Castro who also made the wacky box office hit film "Zombadings 1 : Patayin sa Shokot si Remington" a couple of years back. Also Juana Change did great at what she does best, she delivered her lines neatly, performed well and we admire her effort in doing a lot of daring scenes in this film. And also a job well done to his co-stars who supplied the momentum in keeping the film afloat at all times.

Overall Juana C. The Movie spells a lot of fun. Though it still has some flaws the film manages to keep us entertained and give us a reason to smile upon exiting the cinema.

The Hangover Part III: Movie Review

Hangover Part III
By: Lakwatsera Lovers

The Wolf Pack is back for the epic conclusion of The Hangover Trilogy. First we would like to thank Magic 89.9 for the advance screening tickets we won in their contest. Director Todd Phillips discards the old formula of this franchise and decided to make a new one. Now it's up to the fans if they would appreciate this change but it still depends on the viewers on how they wanted this film in the first place.

When Alan (Zach Galifianakis) dad died, his brother-in-law Doug (Justin Bartha) and fellow "Wolfpack" members Phil (Bradley Cooper) and Stu (Ed Helms) wants him to seek treatment at a medical facility in Arizona. When their road trip began they were halted down by a gangster named Marshall (John Goodman) who wants to settle a score with Chow (Ken Jeong) who stole his gold. With Doug held as hostage the Wolfpack need to finds Chow before its too late.

Honestly we love the first two film's "what happened last night" formula. That is the main reason why we love Hangover films. We're not saying that part III sucks, it also handed out a pretty solid story to revolve around the characters but still we missed the hilarious reveals as the film goes along. The movie centered a lot on Zach Galifianakis and he rises on the occasion. He provided the humor and delivered it well plus a good back up from his pals.

It still has a lot of resemblance from the previous films. The Wolfpack still needs to solve a mystery in which they are forced to end up with unfortunate crazy events. Sadly some of the best scenes were already spoiled in the trailer. But as the movie picks up the pace, gag after gag the audiences were treated with good laughs.

Overall Hangover III still is a pretty decent comedy film. We enjoyed it but not as much as the first two films. Wait for the scene between the end of credits which is the best part for us. We hope that last scene will eventually turn out into another sequel in the next two years.

Something Old and Something New at Chateau 1771

In-the-know food players understand that the key for loyal patrons to keep coming back are the new food offerings that regularly evolve—it’s like a nurturing long term relationship that will keep both parties constantly excited. While this is true, many will agree that there’s also always something charming about the old that deserves a big come back.
Like Chateau 1771, it has managed to keep up with a reputation of serving the finest No Borders Cuisine since the 80’s back when it was still in its original Malate home.  Evoking the feel-good vibe of exquisite flavors of Swiss, Italian, and French, Chateau 1771 was able to make a winning concoction that kept foodies linger over the past two decades.

Now residing in its posh and upscale Greenbelt address, Chateau 1771 remained on top-of-mind for those who wish to experience only the finest in dining. Yes, Chateau 1771 is for people who understand that food is a crucial part of planning in every occasion that deserves a celebration. But of course, those who wish to make an ordinary day transform into something special, starting with gourmet food is the way to go. So before the year comes to a close and in preparation for Chateau's 25th year anniversary next year, Executive Chef Vicky Rose Pacheco rounds out the quarter with a new batch of dishes brining back old flavors, which will surely change the way a gourmet food is defined. Here’s a sample degustation menu that possess the gloss of luxury, an experience that’s packed with allure from all angles.

 Vanilla Brick Chicken

For starter one shouldn’t miss the salmon pillows (P300 net, 2 pieces) showcasing salmon in whole new different light: bits of salmon flakes encased in golden puff pastry over mango cream sauce and basil flakes, this is a revival from the old menu wherein a more high tech way of baking it makes the waiting time shorter. Light, soft, and airy, the combination makes the texture exciting while salmon and mango makes a refreshing, palate-tickling sensation.
There’s no denying that oyster almost tops the rank of everyone’s favorite shellfish which even Chateau Group of Restaurants CEO Ricky Guttierez couldn’t resist. There are many ways to dress these iconic shells, but Executive Chef Vicky’s version is arguably the best, highlighting the bivalves at their zenith while the soft and creamy toppings never overwhelm the briny juiciness retained inside. And at Chateau 1771, the delicate sweetness of the fresh oysters were marked as an oyster-lovers’ paradise —light quality yet filled with ordinary flavors made extraordinary from the freshly harvested oysters of Aklan, baked with butter flavored with shallots, worcestershire sauce and lemon.

Executive Chef Vicky not only was able to make a name for Chateau 1771’s all-time favorite pasta chorizo (P490) since 1988, but this time, with whole wheat spaghetti as a choice. This is definitely a stroke of a genius, holding its own as the star in this simple and healthy pasta perfection.

When doing fish for a crowd, Executive Chef Vicky found out that poaching is the best way in cooking its delicate meat, thus the birth of olive-oil poached halibut (P1070). A foolproof choice for something light and healthy, the tender halibut fillet is poached in olive oil and garlic, with precious spices such as bay leaf, thyme, shallots, and lemon zest producing a distinct aroma, finished off with tomato-orange marmalade for a light kick of citrus.
Next comes another fish specialty, a flavorful baked ocean trout (P630), oven-baked with lemon slices and scattered with fresh thyme leaves, pecans, capers, drizzled with healthy extra virgin olive oil is a classic and clean way to enjoy fish. What’s interesting with the exotic ocean trout is its firm and thick-fleshed meat, made tasty by the fresh waters of Australia. It is always mistaken as salmon although of the same family.

Another treasured and unique dish, vanilla brick spring chicken (P660 net), is a certified organic whole spring chicken, butterflied and deboned, with a spread of vanilla bean dots, butter and garlic grilled under a brick.  While cooking under a brick slab is a technique that may seem primitive, the procedure proved to be the best way of creating a tasty and crisp texture of the skin and also makes the meat moist and tender. Plus, the vanilla bean when smeared on the skin enlivens its delicate taste and flavor, especially when paired with cauliflower two-cheese gratin (P280 net).

Simmering pork with milk and a generous handful of herbs such as sage results in very tender and rustic yet full-flavored meat with rich, silky juices.  That’s why the milk braised pork shoulder (P450) is the perfect foil for either lunch or dinner  boasting an old-Italian technique of cooking--with one bite enough to understand why it’s often called one of Chateau 1771’s great dishes.

Another meat dish that’s worth saving up the space for is the grilled lamb cutlet (P1750). Lamb is the least of the meat that most Filipinos prefer, but Chef Vicky rejects the notion. Grilled to perfection and seasoned with a mint-walnut pesto, it’s added with roasted capsicum sauce, grilled bell peppers and marble potato salad—a unique way of sealing the flavors without the disheartening “gamey” taste of lamb which most people would shy away from. Most diners wouldn’t even thinking about spreading over the lamb with some mint jelly which makes the dish a certified big winner among Chef Vicky’s creations.
Dessert is another work of masterpiece at Chateau 1771 not only for its superior taste and quality, but for every item’s unique homespun charm, just like the Valrhona chocolate ganache tart (P250net). Chef Vicky capitalized on the bittersweet flavor of 70% Valrhona chocolate, a quality French brand which has a deep, well-rounded, flavor and a silkier texture when mixed with French cream making this dessert quite addicting.

Chef Vicky swears by the fact that some of the tastiest, most irresistible dishes are not only about originality, nuance, and verve—most of the time, the old ones have become classics and deserves a rightful place in the new menu. So whether you’re looking for everyday gourmet food or simply has an appetite for fine food, whether you’re treating yourself or somebody else, Chateau 1771 definitely got you covered.

Chateau 1771 – Greenbelt 5 is open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. every Sunday to Thursday and 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 m.n. for Friday to Saturday. A Primer on Nova Prime: The World “AFTER EARTH”

A post-apocalyptic, primal world confronts Jaden Smith (“The Karate Kid”) and Will Smith (“Men in Black” trilogy) in Columbia Pictures' futuristic action adventure “After Earth.”
In the film, a crash landing leaves teenager Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith) and his legendary father Cypher (Will Smith) stranded on Earth, 1,000 years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape. With Cypher critically injured, Kitai must embark on a perilous journey to signal for help, facing uncharted terrain, evolved animal species that now rule the planet, and an unstoppable alien creature that escaped during the crash. Father and son must learn to work together and trust one another if they want any chance of returning home.

A Dying Earth

Kitai Raige lives on Nova Prime, mankind’s new home. One day, he will be – he must be – a great Ranger, like his father before him.

Cypher Raige, Kitai’s father, is the Prime Commander of the United Ranger Corps and one of the greatest leaders in the history of Nova Prime. He is widely credited with saving the humans of Nova Prime from the planet’s fiercest alien threats: The Skrel and their vicious creations, the Ursa.

Starting in the 21st Century, Earth’s environment became increasingly uninhabitable. Massive seismic activity caused frequent earthquakes of alarming intensity; tectonic plates shifted, creating enormous volcanoes and violent collisions between continents; clean water became scarce and the atmospheric composition changed, resulting in deadly temperature fluctuations and air too toxic for human lungs to breathe.

By 2025 AD, it was clear that mankind would need to leave Earth, if there were any chance of survival. The governments of the world convened and mandated the construction of 10 spaceships, or “arks,” that could sustain human life on a quest to find a new inhabitable planet in another galaxy. The destruction of Earth came faster than any had imagined, however, and only six arks were completed in time for launch. Each ark could house only 125,000 – just .0000625% of the human population – but enough to start a new society. Upon leaving Earth, calendars were changed from AD to AE, reflecting our new life “After Earth.”

Before leaving for good, a message was set up for any future visitors expecting to find suitable resources on the planet – letting them know that they are approaching the most dangerous place in the universe: Earth.

A New Life in Nova Prime

When forced to leave Earth, the last of the human race embarked on a journey through space. After 100 years of travel at speeds faster than light, they arrived at Nova Prime and built a new civilization from the ground up.

In the year 222 AE, humans on Nova Prime formed a tripartite government composed of three branches: The United Ranger Corps, The Primus, and The Savant. Without a balance between these representatives, society would crumble.
The Primus is a philosophical leader who sees the downfall of Earth as proof of the evils of technology and rejects science, advising instead based on the deep, spiritual links that bind all on Nova Prime. The Savant, on the other hand, leads through the promotion of scientific discovery, believing that technology and human achievement are the keys to humanity’s survival.

The United Ranger Corps was formed with a single mission: Preserve Humanity. In the last days of humanity’s eviction from Earth, the governments of every nation selected 1,000 of their best and brightest—tacticians, pilots, soldiers and the like—to form a first-response team capable of keeping order through the growing number of natural disasters and international catastrophes. The U.N.-sanctioned group was titled The United Ranger Corps, or “Rangers” for short. The Rangers quickly became the new standard for military service, saving countless lives in the process.

Aspiring Rangers like Kitai must undergo intense training to prove themselves both physically and mentally. For Kitai, becoming a Ranger would prove his worth—not only to himself, but to his father.

The cutlass is a Ranger’s greatest weapon; an extension of the strength that comes from within. Lightweight and handheld, the cutlass is both versatile and elegant, and blends seamlessly into a Ranger’s lifesuit, making it essential for attack, self-defense and survival conditions. Every Ranger memorizes the series of quick finger inputs necessary to activate the hundreds of smart fibers that form numerous weapon configurations from both ends of the handle. The C-40 combat model has a total of 22 configurations, including short blade, spear, long blade, sickle, dagger and more.

The Threats

Our peaceful existence was a brief one. Now, threats loom over us, every single day of our lives.

Just 143 years after landing on Nova Prime (in 243 AE), humanity weathered an attack from The Skrel: an alien species that had long considered Nova Prime their holy ground. To them, humans are vermin infesting their sacred land. We endured this first onslaught; we won—but this was only the beginning.

The Skrel had underestimated mankind in their early attacks. But, through the centuries, the enemy’s weapons became more advanced. In the war of 576AE, they finally released their ultimate weapon: The Ursa. A nightmare of a creature—bred for warfare, and genetically engineered for one reason: to hunt and kill humans. Ursa prey on the pheromones humans secrete when they’re scared. They can sense humans’ fear. Many thought the Ursa unbeatable and awaited mankind’s inevitable demise—but a solution arose, and brought them hope.

Just as it seemed nothing could stop the Ursa, Cypher Raige inadvertently uncovered their weakness: without fear, humans are invisible to the Ursa. In an unprecedented show of self-control and discipline, Raige eliminated his fear and defeated the Ursa. This act of restraint became known as “Ghosting,” and lifted Raige to new heights of fame. There are only seven Ghosts in existence. They are anomalies.
