The Apparition: Movie Review

The Apparition
By: Lakwatsera Lovers

First we would like to thank Ralph Adversario for inviting us to the special advance screening of The Apparition last night at SM Cinema Megamall. The last SM CinExclusive this month that will open today.

Couple Kelly (Ashley Greene) and Ben (Sebastian Stan) is moving to a new home located in a deserted California subdivision. But some strange events happen in their home where lights flicker, molds started to grow into their ceiling and some haunted voices that freaks out the couple. Soon they realize that Ben is actually haunted by his parapsychology experiment they did in college and he needs his former buddy Patrick (Tom Felton) to help them to solve the mystery before it's too late.

The Apparition feels like Paranormal activity without using a handheld camera. It gave out some cheap scares that provided a good sense of entertainment. Though the story is just too plain and simple, there's nothing special about it aside from the special appearance of the long haired lady from the grudge. It also lacked in quality of spooks and chills that a horror movie should posses though it administer some suspenseful moments that keep you engaged with the screen. The good thing is the movie lets your senses alert all throughout thinking what would happen next.

Twilight star Ashley Greene was good in showing his emotions though it's not a good idea that you look investigate ghost with only your nighties on (I know it's not her fault). She sizzles on the screen but failed to connect with his screen partner Sebastian Stan. Tom Felton was good but was having a limited time exposure. The cast was appealing to keep the pace of the film in a steady note.

Overall The Apparition provided some good entertainment factor. Gave out suspenseful scenes but failed to capitalize with the scares. The cast has the potential, they should have done more to improve it. But nonetheless the movie kept us awake.  Please don't watch the trailer yet as it would spoil the entire movie. It's still okay if you watch it on the big screen but for us it's better to wait for its DVD release.

Lakwatsera Lovers rates it 6 out of 10 stars

Bait: Movie Review

By: Lakwatsera Lovers

We're always a fan of shark movies because of the brutality with people getting eaten in pieces. In Bait the story is a little bit ridiculous with a great white shark swimming inside a supermarket but come to think of it, the idea is fresh and somewhat enjoyable.

A deadly tsunami hits the shore when a group of people find themselves inside a flooded supermarket. The survivors started climbing up to the top of the shelves for safety. But as the water rises quickly, the group desperately looked for a way out but there's also another big problem the tsunami brought a pair of very hungry great white sharks.

Animatronic great white sharks are used in this film which we found amusing. There are some awesome bloody shark scenes that impressed us. Though Bait lacks in body count, they should have let the sharks eat a lot of characters. A lot of people were saved instead of being torn into little pieces. Also there's a lot of stories between each characters were told that the audience won't seem to care. We still loved the fact that they brought this idea in this man vs nature type of films.

The characters were also acceptable with which includes Xavier Samuel,(The Twilight Saga: Eclipse) Step Up 3D’s Sharni Vinson and Fantastic Four’s Julian MacMahon. They all provided average acting for this film.

Overall, fans of this type of genre will probably enjoy this. It's a little silly of course but the entertainment factor can still be felt. There's a lot of room for this film to improve that they should have explored maybe more victims and less survivors can do the trick.

Lakwatsera Lovers rates it 6 out of 10 stars

Three Stooges: Movie Review

Three Stooges
By: Lakwatsera Lovers

The classic comedy trio comes back to the big screen as finally the long wait is over as Three Stooges finally opens in the cinemas. The Farrelly brothers (There's Something about Mary) gave Larry, Moe and Curly a trip to the modern times.

Three strange looking babies were left in front of a doorstep of an orphanage run by the mother superior (Jane Lynch). The three grew up as Moe (Chris Diamantopoulous), Larry (Sean Hayes) and Curly (Will Sasso) who gives a lot of problems with the nuns. But the problems have come to worst when they learned that the orphanage needs 850K to settle or their home will be closed.  Soon the three embarks on a mission to raise money and save the orphanage.

This movie will be good or bad depending  on the viewer. With the movie mostly relying on slapstick comedy like finger-poking, slapping, nose pulls and other ridiculous brainless movements from the three. Some might find it dull and old school while others might quickly enjoy it. In fairness to this film it recreates the classic Three Stooges sketches dating back to the 80's capping it with the right combination of sound effects and buffoonery entertainment. The sad thing is a lot of people might find this a little bit silly, the humor used is best for young kids and people who grew up with this trio. On the positive note the film stays to a cleaner type of comedy that could suit for all ages.

The trio was effective incorporating the three stooges. It's safe enough to say that the three (Diamantopoulous, Hayes and Sasso) gave the life back to the legendary characters. The cameos were also refreshing that backed-up the trio really well. Although the Jersey shore sub-plot was really unnecessary.

Overall Three Stooges come up short. We can easily count the number of times we chuckled at their silly jokes. The three boys are definitely stupid, bad-tempered and violent in a crazy way. It's going to be hard to tell whether people will like this or not as what we said it all depends upon your taste.

Lakwatsera Lovers rates it 5 out of 10 stars

Globe Business and Zalora provide unmatched quality service to online shoppers

Globe Business and Zalora provide unmatched quality service to online shoppers

ONLINE SHOPPING company Zalora ( and Globe Business have embarked on a partnership, proving again why Globe Business is the preferred telecoms provider for small and medium businesses. Globe Business was the first provider of choice for Zalora, that relies heavily on telecoms technology to run its business.
There are multiple thrusts in our partnership with Globe Business. First of all was the network service itself. Globe Business was our first choice with its reliability, coverage, and the overall solution it provides to us. The account was also managed very well so we were able to resolve any issues with very short turnaround time. We started out with a leased line connection for our network. We’re already up to 17mbps in our Internet connection.
Being an Internet company, we rely a lot on our main connection. We need to do a lot of things on the Internet, and to do that we rely on Globe Business. So far, the experience has been very fruitful. We’re very happy with the speed, reliability and quality of services that they provide,” said Brian Cu, Zalora Co-Founder and Managing Director.

DRIVING E-COMMERCE. Online retailer Zalora and Globe Business partner for the best online shopping experience for Zalora customers and Globe subscribers. Globe Business' advanced, fast, secure, and reliable network, plus its solutions for postpaid services, G-Cash, mobile Internet, and smartphone apps are expected to drive the growth of Zalora and other e-commerce companies. In photo are (left to right): Gian Villaceran, Direct Sales Manager South GMA Market Development Small and Medium Business Segment, Brian Cu, Zalora Co-Founder and Managing Director, Blue Avelino, Head of Small and Medium Business Segment and Dennis Salvador, South GMA Market Development Regional Sales Head.

More productive
Besides the leased line Internet connection, Cu said that their company relies on Globe Business for other back end requirements for the business.

For example, Zalora issued Globe Business postpaid lines to its employees, as well as Blackberry phones they could use for mobile email and Internet services.

From our Internet connection, we moved on to Globe Business postpaid lines. We deal with 450 brands on our websites, and all of these are account managed by our buyers. We prefer to use Globe Business postpaid plans because they have the best suite of services for postpaid.
We rely a lot on email, so we had Blackberries issued to a lot of our employees. We have over a hundred subscriptions to Globe Business. I’ve lost count of the exact number,” he explained.

Zalora has also tapped the technology and services of Globe Business for its marketing efforts. Two of these services are G-Cash and the Tattoo mobile Internet broadband.
We have G-Cash. It’s our premiere mobile payment solution and we offer it to our customers. We also work with Tattoo, especially now that Tattoo launched their Lifestyle Stick, which is a very good fit with Zalora’s lifestyle branding. We work heavily with Tattoo to cross-market, and cross-fertilize both our customer bases,” said Cu.

He also revealed that Zalora will soon be launching its own mobile app, to allow customers to shop online using their smartphones.

When we launch the Zalora mobile app, Globe will be our very first point of call to really broadcast the app to our customer base. We’re also working with MyGlobe Reward to be able to offer Zalora vouchers and products, as part of the MyGlobe Reward catalog,” he said.

ZALORA is the country's top online shopping website, with a full range of products easily at shoppers' fingertips--about 20,000 products and 450 brands all available online. Zalora has partnered with Globe Business to boost its business operations and enhance its customers' shopping experience. Globe Business is Zalora's choice for solutions like its website's powerful Internet connection and the mobile email service and postpaid lines for its employees.

Driving growth
Cu predicts exciting times for e-commerce in the Philippines in general—and Zalora, he added, is poised to be the largest online retailer in the country, and the largest e-commerce company.

He said that Zalora is relying on Globe Business to turn that dream in to a reality. First, Globe Business provides Zalora with back end solutions that increase the productivity of its employees. They can find the best products and get them online as fast as possible, through the speed and reliability of the Globe network.

On our front end, we have our co-marketing effort, where we can really integrate online shopping with a mobile-based platform like Globe Business. This is done through its reliable data services and its offerings on smartphones.

Imagine having a Zalora app on every smartphone sold on a postpaid plan. Imagine being able to conveniently shop for fashion on your phone, and getting billed later through your Globe account.
There’s still a lot of growth not just for Zalora but for e-commerce in general. We haven’t reached our peak yet and we’re at a growth stage. With our partnership with Globe Business in reaching the right customer base, we can accelerate that growth even further,” he said.
Like Zalora, you can experience the benefits of having customized back end and front end solutions for your business. Consult a Globe Business Account Manager, visit Globe stores, call the Globe Business Hotline at +632 730-1010 or log on to today to find out more.

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen: Movie Review

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen
By: Lakwatsera Lovers

The movie is based on the novel of Paul Torday and thanks to the appealing lead stars, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen provides a romantic tale engaged to turn an impossible project to a possible one. It's an Ayala exclusive film and it's still showing at Glorietta and Trinoma cinemas.

Alfred (Ewan McGregor) is a British fisheries official approached by a wealthy sheik (Amr Waked) who wants wants to bring  salmon fishing to his desert homeland. Alfred finds the project impossible to make but with the sheik backing up the expenses and the government helping him with the project, he soon realizes that it be done. Inspired with the sheik's vision for his beloved country and with the help of her consultant Harriet (Emily Blunt), Fred dedicates his time to finish the project.

It's a sweet love story which is plain and simple that can enlighten the heart easily. The good thing is they did not focus on the love story of Alfred and Harriet at all times. It was divided well as the movie tackled about friendship, determination, inspiration, hard work and love. It also showed some political banter at the side of it that added some complexity to the story. Thanks to Lasse Hallstrom's formula he just made this film relaxing that really suites to its target audience.

The actors were appealing, thanks to Ewan MacGregor and Emily Blunt's strong performance. The two of them showed an attractive on screen tandem. They act too natural that you feel the emotions running through them. We also loved their British accents that really made our day. Other cast including Amr Waked and Kristin Scott Thomas also performed convincingly in their respective roles.

Overall Salmon Fishing in the Yemen has an absurd title for a movie but it gave a fresh love story that is interesting to watch. From the good chemistry of the leads and the ambitious project of bringing fishes in the dessert that seems hopeless, it feels like it's based on a true story.

Lakwatsera Lovers rates it 7 out of 10 stars

The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate: Movie Review

The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate
By: Lakwatsera Lovers

The reunion film of martial arts superstar Jet Li and director Tsui Hark is a bonus for us as we're a fan of Once upon a time movie franchise. The combination of Hark's wuxia work and CGI effects paid off even we only had a 2D release.

A bunch of characters met inside the Dragon Inn. All of them are preparing for a dominant sandstorm that would wipe the area. Some have secret agendas hiding on their sleeves while others wait for the rising of the legendary city which is buried underneath the sands with endless treasures.

The movie is filled with spectacular visuals that will amuse you from start to finish. The amazing old school  fight scenes are mixed with the newest CGI technologies which propels the entertainment factor. The sword fights, flying arrows and martial arts stunts really looked dazzling in the big screen.  Although the run-time is a bit long with a lot of characters entering and providing their own set of stories. But a lot of twist and betrayals mixed with good humor added some quality entertainment.

Jet Li still does what he does best providing his great set of skills in martial arts that really set the pace up. With his aging body, Li showed his fans that he still got the impressive touch in this kind of movies. If you're a big fan of Jet Li and you missed him at Expendables 2 this is a movie for you to catch. Other cast were also impressive though it's too many of them to mention they really backed up the film well.

Overall Flying Swords of Dragon Gate is a good film. We still enjoyed it even it has a ridiculous sword fight finale inside a tornado. It's an instant classic and another great performance from our idol Jet Li reminding me of his Wong Fei-hung days.

It's not to late too catch this film as you can still watch it until Tuesday at SM Megamall and SM North Edsa.

Lakwatsera Lovers rates it 7 out of 10 stars

Looper: Movie Review

By: Lakwatsera Lovers

Were not a fan of science-fiction themed movies but an intriguing 93% at rotten tomatoes makes this film a part of our watch list.

Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a "looper" where his job is to assassinate a target brought back by the mob from the future using a time machine. He waits for his target in a certain place with his white tarp laid out and when the victim arrives he shoots it immediately and dispose the body quickly. He earns a lot of silvers by doing this job but the downside of it is he needs to kill his future self sent back 30 years in the future to "close the loop" as the termination of his contract. Soon that day arrives the mob sent his future self (Bruce Willis) which he needs to assassinate.

Another time travel movie in which it's puzzling but not complicated enough to understand what's really happening in the story. A lot of questions may linger in your mind but if you come think of it you'll understand it well enough because it allows the viewers imagination to fill in the blanks. The setting of the film is not too futuristic unlike other time travel themed movies. The year is 2042 and there still cornfields with simple farm houses instead of computer generated houses with modern technology doing all the work.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt was great in his performance selling the idea of he and Bruce Willis are the younger and older Joe in many aspects. While Bruce Willis do what he does best reeling his experience in handling this kind of roles. What we love the most is Pierce Gagnon the kid who talks like Sean Penn that also sells an odd looking face which is creepy enough to star as a demonic child in a next horror movie.

Overall Looper is good in a lot of aspects where the audience can enjoy or get bored while watching it. It's kinda too long for us and we think it lacked some adrenaline scenes that will excite you to see the next part. The films strong parts is it's hard to predict what would happen next and it has a nice twist in the end.

Lakwatsera Lovers rates it 7.5 out of 10 stars

TiktiK The Aswang Chronicles: Movie Review

TiktiK The Aswang Chronices
By: Lakwatsera Lovers`

First we would like to thank @TiktiKOCt17 at twitter for the premiere night tickets, movie posters and the comic books of the extravagant Tagalog film of the year: TiktiK The Aswang Chronicles. The cinema was jam packed with fans who were lucky to watch the first movie shot entirely on a green screen.

Makoy (Dingdong Dantes) travels to Pulupandan to bring back his pregnant girlfriend Sonia (Lovi Poe) who happens to hate him a lot after he chickens out with the responsibility to become a father. In order to win her back Makoy decided to stick around at her house and helped his Dad (Joey Marquez) for the preparations of Sonia's birthday. But as soon the night falls, "Aswangs" lurks around the house to salvage Sonia's baby and it's up to Makoy's hands to protect his family against these creatures.

TiktiK promises to revive Tagalog films in a unique way, with outstanding amazing visuals that captivates the audience from start to finish. You'll appreciate every single scene and every moment all throughout. You can tell that it was made by brilliant minds of hardworking talented people that sacrificed a lot of time and effort to make it look great. The idea of shooting the whole film on a green screen is not only a challenge on the actors it also produced an astounding fresh looking atmosphere that will blow your mind away.

The make-ups were pretty awesome too, specially in what they did to the "Aswangs" that will make you feel proud that pinoys can now compete in other countries. We enjoyed the slow motion fight scenes equipped with a cool soundtrack that showed the real meaning of entertainment. Just one lapse is, the CGI Effects used in the latter part, we think that it would have been much better if they stick with the human “Aswangs.”  Other than that they did well in every aspect of the film.

The cast did well too with Dingdong Dantes leading the pack as the good-guy you would love to hate. He shows his versatility in acting. Lovi Poe was good too it is nice to see her not as a villain this time that easily shows her charm and beauty. Joey Marquez was the scene stealer, he provided the humor that made the crowd forget that this is a horror movie. Other cast like Janice de Belen, Ramon Bautista, Lj Reyes and the other casts contributed well that keep the film in a positive note.

Overall TiktiK: The Aswang Chronices shows what we can do in producing quality films with Director Erik Matti leading the charge in taking that risk in reviving our movie industry. This is a must watch film as we promise that you'll enjoy every single bit of this spectacular motion picture and we just ran out of adjectives in describing this film.

Lakwatsera Lovers rates it 9 out of 10 stars
