DVD Review: Footloose (2011)

DVD Review: Footloose (2011)
By: Lakwatsera Lovers

We were quite surprised to see Footloose in DVD when we saw some posters of it in the cinemas. So we decided to rent it and watch it at home.

Ren MacCormack (Kenny Worlmald) moves into a small town where loud music and dancing were banned because of tragic accident involving five teens. He is confused by that law and he started to make new friends. Eventually falling in love with Ariel (Julianne Hough) the daughter of the local councilmen who passed that strict ordinance outlawing both dancing and excessively loud music.

Actually we were not familiar to the classic film starred by Kevin Bacon but in this movie the charismatic old style of dancing was really pleasant to watch. With almost unknown stars Footloose provided that sweet music renditions and let the viewers hum to the beat specially to those who loved the 80's era. Though the story was a little predictable it still provided an awesome dance scenes and cool revival of songs.

Overall it's a nice movie, the formula worked out but we think if Zac Efron did Ren MacCormack role it would turned out much better but due to his schedule he turned down the role.

Lakwatsera Lovers rates it 7 out of 10 stars

Casts: Kenny Worlmald, Julianne Hough, Ziah Colon and Dennis Quaid

By: Lakwatsera Lovers

Director Marc Foster (Monster Ball, Tha Kite Runner) together with Mirror Mirror screenplay writer, Jason Keller creates an inspirational movie based on the true story of Sam Childers (played by Gerard Butler), a reformed drug dealer who decides to dedicate his life by helping others in the war-torn East Africa to protect orphaned children.

Official Synopsis

When ex-biker-gang member Sam Childers makes the life-changing decision to go to East Africa to help repair homes destroyed by civil war, he is outraged by the unspeakable horrors faced by the region's vulnerable populace, especially the children. But for Sam, it is not enough to shelter the LRA's intended victims. Determined to save as many as possible, he leads armed missions deep into enemy territory to retrieve kidnapped children, restoring peace to their lives — and eventually his own.

AXA Philippines Donates P1.7 million for the benefit of Sendong victims

Left to right: From AXA Philippines: Lora Reboton, Grace Garcia, and Rien Hermans; CARE representative in the Philippines, Celso Dulce, and ACCORD’s Marietta Alcid and Athena Denise Gepte.

AXA Philippines Donates P1.7 million for the benefit of Sendong victims

Last January 31, 2012, AXA Philippines President and CEO, Rien Hermans handed over the proceeds of a month-long campaign initiated by company management to gather financial support from AXA Philippines employees and distributors for the victims of the devastating typhoon Sendong. Typhoon Sendong destroyed thousands of homes and caused millions of pesos in damages in the Northern Mindanao area in late 2011.

The amount was raised through a campaign entitled, Hearts in Action for a Million, wherein AXA Philippines employees, management and distributors contributed financial aid. Some groups even contributed their activity fund, the amount allocated for their group activity and Christmas gathering. The objective was to raise a million pesos in relief funds for the families affected by the disaster.

The campaign was a notable success, raising a total of Php2.1 million in a span of three weeks. A check for Php1.7 million was turned over to the local representative of CARE, a leading, international humanitarian organization fighting global poverty. The remainder of the proceeds was kept in trust to provide direct assistance to employees and distributors of AXA Philippines directly affected by typhoon Sendong.

In October 2011, CARE, AXA Global and Turkey together with AXA Philippines visited Camarines Sur to study the disaster risk management program implemented by CARE’s local arm, ACCORD or Assistance and Cooperation for Community Resilience and Development. Both ACCORD and CARE are working together to teach local communities to be more prepared for natural disasters and to create sustainable livelihoods to enable faster rehabilitation after such terrible events.

The Php1.7 million donated by the Hearts in Action for a Million campaign will be used to provided non-food needs (such as clothing, toiletries, and other basic necessities) of 5,000 families in Iligan who have lost their home and livelihood due to typhoon Sendong. ACCORD and CARE’s priority in the first 3 months is to deliver the necessities, such as food, water, sanitation for these families. Afterwards, they will help these families rebuild their shelter and provide livelihood support. They will also participate in risk reduction and disaster management sessions to better equip them for the uncertainties of the future. ACCORD and CARE will engage the local communities to rebuild their surroundings as well, with regular cleanup and tree-planting activities. The focus is on families in the hard-to-reach areas, and the funds will be allocated where it will create the most impact and given to where it is most needed. As of February 2012, ACCORD and CARE have reached nearly 100% of the target 5,000 families and have provided them the necessary supplies and have conducted several disaster risk management sessions as well. They aim to reach 100% by the end of March and move on to the next phase of coordinating shelter and livelihood recovery.

We have proved that through the generous hearts of employees, management and distributors of AXA Philippines, we are able to generate more than a million pesos to help our brothers and sisters in need. A small part of the proceeds was actually allocated to assist AXA employees that were affected by the typhoon Sendong. The funds raised have contributed a lot in helping families rebuild their lives. Truly, AXA Philippines has gone above and beyond its noble purpose to continuously and consistently support our customers in securing their financial future, by helping the community in Northern Mindanao to start anew and secure a more sustainable future.

The retail portion gives residents access to some of their wants and needs.

Avida Towers Intima offers intimate,
exclusive abode at historic Paco district

AVIDA TOWERS INTIMA is set to rise in the Paco district--a place of historic significance right at the heart of Manila, the nation’s capital.

Located along President Quirino Avenue Extension, Avida Towers Intima offers unmatched accessibility and conveniences to its residents, as it is located near places of work, education and leisure. It is ideal for both individuals and families who are seeking for the perfect home in the heart of Manila, and in the middle of places that matter.

With Paco district being close to major CBDs like Makati and Quezon City, future residents of Avida Towers Intima will find themselves in an advantaged position with easy access to these key cities via major thoroughfares.   Also in close proximity to Avida Towers Intima are various business centers, schools and universities, hotels, restaurants and of course historical attractions.

At the 4th podium level is a full roster of amenities, including this pool.

Exclusive living

With accessibility as a given, the real charm of Avida Towers Intima lies in its design and the concept behind it. The project is unique from other Avida condominium developments in the metro as it offers only a single tower within a master-planned community, assuring that it keeps to its name as being intimate and exclusive. “We are aware of our consumers’ need for a peaceful retreat, especially in such a busy place like Paco, says Dez Cruz, Project Strategic Management Head of Avida Land. “As such, we’ve decided to offer a one-tower project, without sacrificing any features that clients equate with the Avida brand.”

Apart from serving as a peaceful home in the middle of the city, Avida Towers Intima within itself offers an added oasis for residents, with the 4th podium level reserved for a full roster of amenities. It holds the adult and kiddie pools, a grand lawn, play area, clubhouse, lounge area and jogging path. A viewing deck at the rooftop is an added amenity, giving residents refreshing views of the Makati and Manila skylines, as well as Manila Bay.

The project also emphasizes safety as the key to an intimate lifestyle. It will have 24/7 security with added measures such as CCTV monitoring in the lobby.

The lawn on the 4th podium level provides the structure with ample greenery.

The project is unique from other Avida condominium developments because it offers only a single tower within a master-planned community, assuring that it keeps to its name as being intimate and exclusive.

Five condo must-haves

Avida Towers Intima, like all other Avida projects, has the “Five Condo Must-Haves,” a standard that assures future residents of the same quality enjoyed by other Avida property owners. Apart from having only 747 units for more privacy, the project also has design features that allow for natural lighting and ventilation; practical amenities; emergency power not just in common areas but within each unit; and last but not least, flexible payment terms.

Assuring the top-notch quality of the project and the longevity of the residents’ investment, Ayala Property Management Corporation (APMC) will handle the site’s property maintenance and management.  Leasing Services by Avida (LSA), on the other hand, can help investors reap profit from their purchase by having their properties rented out to interested parties.

Prospective buyers can choose from studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom spaces. Other features that they can look forward to are four elevator units servicing all floors, and three levels of podium parking.

We are proud of all Avida projects because they carry what we believe as necessary features and amenities that are important to modern-day living,” says Cruz. “But with Avida Towers Intima, you get the added bonus of exclusivity and history because of the project’s location and single tower feature. Intimate, modern and historically-sited—now that’s a combination we seldom encounter,” she concluded.

Wrath of Titans: Movie Review

Wrath of Titans
By: Lakwatsera Lovers

Before watching the sequel we rented Clash of the Titans and watched it last weekend so we can refresh our memory. We loved the first part and we also enjoyed the aftermath of this movie. We would like to thank Gameloft Blog  for the advance screening tickets we won on their site and be the first who experienced the Wrath of Titans in 3D.

Demigod Perseus (Sam Worthington) is now living in a quiet village as a fisherman with his 10 year old son, Helius. While the Gods are struggling and weakened by humanity's lack of devotion. Kronos and the imprisoned Titans are getting stronger when Ares, Zeus' godly son, and Hades teamed up to captured Zeus. Once again it's up to Perseus hands to save mankind.

Wrath of the Titans maintained the intensity of non stop fast paced action scenes that's really impressive. With the powerful cast returning to reprise their roles leaded by Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes. The visuals were fantastic and mythical creatures was well made. Though for us Clash of the Titans is much better, Wrath of the Titans still will provide that same excitement you felt from the first part. We loved the son of Poseidon as he provided some humor to the seriousness of the film.

Another adventure and astonishing battles are expected in this sequel. New characters and fierce opponents awaits Perseus as once again he will defy all odds. Overall it's an intense film and a really good movie adaptation about the mythical gods.

The Hunger Games: Movie Review

The Hunger Games
By: Lakwatsera Lovers

Finally after a long wait The Hunger Games opens today and thanks to Movie Punch I was able to attend the special screening last night at SM Megamall. This is the first time I watched a jam-packed advance screening for a foreign movie as a lot of people took seats on the floor to experience the most anticipated movie this year.

Every year the Capitol hosts an annual game called the Hunger Games in which one girl and boy in each district aged 12-18 are drawn via lottery to participate in a televised battle for survival as everyone should kill one another to become the sole survivor. On the reaping day Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) was frightened when her little sister Prim was drawn to represent district 12 so she decided to volunteer as a tribute in order to save her sister and for the boys Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) was picked. In order to survive the games they were mentored by a drunkard Haymitch Abernathy (Woody Harrelson). The two must survive the odds in order to win this prestigious event

Another saga is born with The Hunger Games providing an epic adaptation of the book written by Suzanne Collins. The movie was just an epic start of the three book series. This is a high adrenaline fast paced complete package film that will surely blow your cinematic experience. No wonder if the film breaks box office receipts next week as it would surely be the newest phenomenon for the youth.

The film was brilliant as the story was balanced perfectly all throughout. The action, that everyone expects in this movie that's well provided by minimizing the brutality but still compels to the story.  The drama, in which you'll feel the effects of the tragic losses endured by the characters that you care for. The romance, between the leads that would start another triangle affair that will be developed more to the succeeding films. The suspense, from the fight scenes that you cheer for Katniss and Peeta to stay alive against the odds that are thrown to them. A well distributed fast paced story that will pump your energy level and would aim to glue you into your seat until the end of credits.

As for the casts Jennifer Lawrence outlasted a lot of young actresses who auditioned for Katniss role in which perfectly suites her. Those fiery personality gave the audiences a reason to cheer for. She totally made Katniss role so likable and effective. For Josh Hutcherson he did a good job portraying Peeta which soon would start another love rivalry against Gale played by Liam Hemsworth that barely felt in this film. A huge plus for the supporting casts as they did a nice job portraying their characters.

Overall The Hunger Games left me another reason to forget the prediction that the world would end this December as the second installment of this series is set to be released November next year. I recommend this movie to each and everyone who would like to see a one of a kind film that will surely entertain you from start to finish.

May the odds be ever in your favor.

The Muppets: Movie Review

The Muppets
By: Lakwatsera Lovers

We are not really a fan of  The Muppets as we only know two Muppet characters ( Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy). Well all we can say it is not too late to fall in love with these genius creatures as they totally rocked the big screen.

Three fans (Jason Segel, Amy Adams and Walter) decided to take a tour on the old muppet studios. When Walter (another muppet) heard that Tex Richman (Chris Cooper) wants to take down the studio for oil. Now they decided to find the old gang back who each have their own separate lives and make one more show to raise ten million dollars to save the Muppet theater.

Obviously this movie is really fun to watch, with all the singing and lively characters the film never showed a dull side. A whopping 96% on rotten tomatoes proves that a lot of critics indeed enjoyed the whole film. The jokes are funny and we love the idea of traveling by map which they do best. Though it's hard think if the younger audiences can capture this film in their imagination. This would be a tough sell here but we are recommending this for you to try as it's a really entertaining movie. A lot of cameo roles from Hollywood stars made this flick more amusing. We also admire Jason Segel and Amy Adams as they did a nice job in blending their roles with the whole pack.

Overall this is a a nice tribute for the muppets that is worth to watch. A must movie for the people who loved this series when they were still young. And again we tell you that it's not too late to love The Muppets.

Corazon Ang Unang Aswang: Movie Review

Corazon Ang Unang Aswang
By: Lakwatsera Lovers

Special Thanks to Shangri-la Plaza for the tickets of Corazon Ang Unang Aswang. Last night, was the special screening of the movie made possible by The Ericholics in cooperation with www.erichgonzalesofficial.com. Some of the stars were present during the said event including Mark Gil, Epy Quizon, Mon Confiado, Director Richard Somes and of course Ms. Erich Gonzales.

Corazon (Erich Gonzales) and Daniel (Derek Ramsey) is a couple who lives in a town who is still haunted by the past war. The couple has only one wish in their five year marriage, is to be blessed with a baby. Together they went out of town to seek some help, and they met a devotee of San Gerardo which is the patron saint of pregnant woman. She was told to have faith with the patron and she'll have a child. Her devotion pays off but when she gave birth her baby died making Corazon act crazy. With a shattered heart and broken dreams Corazon went into the woods and unleashed a darker side of her.

A lot of viewers maybe will be misled with the title thinking that this movie is a pure horror movie. The attack of the horror genre was different in which we found quite interesting as the film focused more on the romantic tale between the leads. Though it have a slow start it came up with shocking revelations towards the end. Some of the parts were a little bit boring and the movie seems too long. But when you come think of it it is one of a kind film and not an average horror film.

One who caught up our attention was the performance of Erich Gonzales, she really blossomed in her acting career as she was our bet to win Star Circle Quest. She did a magnificent portrayal of Corazon and even she has that scary costume with blood stains on her mouth she still looks pretty. While Derek Ramsey on the other hand once again proves that he is one of the best male leads in his generation. Though it's a little bit awkward to think that in the movie they were married for 5 years the chemistry pushed through. A good job by the supporting cast and a brilliant director furnished it for a complete package.

Overall the movie was good with fine acting and a good story, the film just lacked with the scare factor that we were expecting. Corazon Ang Unang Aswang for us will fall into a love story genre.

Mirror Mirror: Movie Review

Mirror Mirror
By: Lakwatsera Lovers

First we would like to thank Power Plant Mall facebook fan page for the advance screening tickets of Mirror Mirror we won on their page. All we know that there is two Snow White film adaptation this year and this version is much family oriented and would surely give a color to the classic fairytale.

Snow White (Lily Collins) is living with the wicked queen ( Julia Roberts) who remorselessly rules a kingdom that really belongs to her. With the kingdom in despair of losing royalty the queen wants to marry a young prince (Armie Hammer) but when the prince saw Snow White he quickly fell in love with her beauty. Now the queen wants Snow White dead but with the help of the seven rebel dwarfs they would help her to fight for the freedom of her kingdom.

We can say that this is an enjoyable adaptation of Snow White. At first we thought that the story was the same but it is a different untold version. The story was fun and the characters was amusing specially the dwarfs with new names each with unique personality. Lily Collins was a perfect fit to play Snow White, with her alluring beauty you can love her character easily except for her annoying eyebrows that really bothered us. Lynn Collins (John Carter) is a different actress as we would like to clarify that as some people are confused thinking that she is also Snow White. Julia Roberts was a good choice for the evil queen as we saw a pleasant side of her. Instead of hating her because she's a villain, you'll enjoy what she does as she so entertaining. Such a priceless adaptation that will give you something to talk about after.

Overall Mirror Mirror is a feel good movie, a perfect film for the whole family especially for teens who want to see their childhood favorite come to life. From the cast, to the setting up to the story it's worth to watch in the big screen. We recommend this film as we enjoyed it a lot. It's a plus for us as we are ahead of other countries because we had an earlier release date of the film. Mirror Mirror is slated to open March 30 in the US.

Experience the magical story one more time on March 15.

Women don’t simply take care of their husbands, their kids and run the households—many of these women also have to work in full-time jobs and work on their own careers. Some of these women are also single mothers. Others endure loneliness while working overseas. It’s only right to have a Red Letter Day event that shows our appreciation for their sacrifice and hard work,” says Tess Tatco, Avida marketing manager.

That’s why we’re giving everyone a chance to say ‘Thank You’ in special ways through our new campaign for 2012,” says Tatco.

As the saying goes, behind every great man is a woman. It’s time to thank all the women that make all our lives worth living. Go to the Avida Facebook Page and join the Red Letter Day International Women’s Day celebration.

Dr. Seuss' The Lorax: Movie Review

Dr. Seuss: The Lorax
By: Lakwatsera Lovers

First of all we would like to thank Pinoy Exchange for the red carpet IMAX premiere tickets of The Lorax at SM North Edsa sponsored by United International Pictures and Solar Entertainment Corporation. It's nice to see the Lorax in person with bunch of kids running around him before the start of the movie.

"I am the Lorax and I speak for the trees" so said the Lorax, a yellow mustached cat like creature as he explains that trees can't speak for themselves. Thneedville, is seemingly a happy town where people are contented with plastic tress and bottled air. Ted (Zac Efron), a 12 year old kid who wants to impress Audrey (Taylor Swift), her cute neighbor who wanted to see a real tree. His grandmother told him to find the Once-ler outside the town to know what happened to the trees. With lengthy flashbacks  the Once-ler told Ted  what happened and now the future lies in his hands.

We admit that we indeed love animated films as we are still young at heart. With Dr. Seuss: The Lorax, It genuinely amuse us with the CGI effects, fancy characters and the good material of the story. It's not an average animated film as it will taught kids and adults to care for our environment as the movie shows what would happen if there were no trees left. A lot of funny scenes all throughout that everyone would enjoy specially the fishes who loves to sing and amazingly could walk.

With the a nice variety of voices, the animation feels so right and never had a missed spot. Along with the musical scenes that is so playful The Lorax absolutely gave the audience a reason to enjoy it more. The characters can easily stick in your head specially Mr. O'hare which we can compare with our former president (lol). They are all likable and entertaining. An awesome charming cast leaded by Danny DeVito as the Lorax, Zac Efron as Ted Taylor Swift as Audrey and Ed Helms as the Once-ler.

Overall the movie is a must watch as the formula of the story relied on preserving our environment and in every ticket you purchase a part of it will go to a tree planting cause in which they are aiming to plant 2012 trees. It also has an awesome 3D visuals so it's worth to see it in an IMAX theater. Experience Dr. Seuss masterpiece: The Lorax only at cinemas this Wednesday.

"UNLESS someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. Its Not"- The Lorax

Lakwatsera Lovers rates it 9 out of 10 stars.

First we would like to thank Walt Disney Pictures Philippines and Nido Fortified Science Discovery Center for the Red carpet IMAX premiere tickets we won on their facebook page. The screening happened last night at the IMAX theater of SM Mall of Asia

Former military captain John Carter, was mysteriously transported to the planet Barsoom (Mars). Where he becomes a part of the conflicts between the nations of the planet. Finding himself a prisoner of the Tharks, he met the beautiful Princess of Helium (Lynn Collins) which needs to stop her marriage and save Barsoom from the hands of the evil Sab Than (Dominic West). Now he's forced to help the planet which may depends on his hands.

John Carter is based on a classic 11 volume novel written by Edgar Rice Burrough, the Barsoom series which is a hundred years old. It surely had a huge amount of budget based on the astonishing CGI visuals and the crafty lively characters. It's like Star Wars meets Cowboys vs Aliens sequel in which the era was fresh and the scenes was leveled up to the max. The fight scenes was epic in which you can feel the tension and the excitement.

The characters was spectacular specially the Tharks, a four handed green creatures with tusks on their faces. We also loved John Carter's pet Woola, an adorable dog like creature that were sure you'll plan to adopt. This movie has a complete package from the funny struggle of John Carter with the gravity, to the romance between the two leads up to the action battles between the aliens and humans.

We recommend this movie to all the diehard fans of a stories about a warrior who wants to save his princess. For the people who want to see a decent action adventure film and to those who wants to see a marvelous splendid visuals from start to finish. But please don't bring your kids 5 years old and below as they would just ruin your night just like what my seatmate did last night as the kid keeps talking and talking about when will the movie end. Watch the movie and ignore the critics as they always had low ratings in some decent films and spend a little more bucks and experience it on IMAX 3D.

And please just ignore Taylor Kitsch false comments issues from preventing you to watch his film. Just sit back, relax and enjoy the movie.

Lakwatsera Lovers rates it 8.5 out of 10 stars
